火葬 | The cremation

My grandmother's body was cremated in a shiny building surrounded by forest. We ate a lunch of おにぎり (rice balls) while waiting for the cremation to be complete. Afterwards, we did 骨上げ (bones-picking ceremony) with the remains (Panel 3) and placed them in an urn (Panel 4), placing the bones inside feet first.

The series was published in Real Matter magazine in 2020.
It was also used in a Japanese studies lecture at La Trobe University to illustrate practices of everyday religion in a Japanese setting.
