The door flew open, my heart sunk to the floor, but it was my grandma, "What are you doing outside?" she asked, concerned.
"Ah, studying! Trying different places to see if the fresh air improves my retention, "
She looked me dead in the eyes and shot me daggers. I felt a chill go down my spine.
" Just get in the house! Your father would like to talk to you," she stated coldly.
I walked into my room and put down my bag. Moving towards the living room, I saw Dad on the couch watching TV.
Grandma observed from the hallway; He gestured to sit beside him. The news was on, but it didn't seem like he was paying attention to it. There was no talking; it felt like a lifetime, just sitting there in silence
"Ataru, what is your home address?"
Huh? Is this a serious question?
He got up and put his hand on my shoulder. I have never seen him act like this before.
I looked over at grandma. There was a question plainly showing on her face.
' Is he okay?'
I shrugged back in response.
Looking back at my father, there was one question running in my mind; what was going on?
"Son, it's......... related to your mother,"
My mom! What do you mean my mom?
"What about her Dad?"
"Her father wants to meet you."
I've never met my mother's side of the family. All I could do was shake my head and give a weak smile. I didn't know what else to expect.
" Your mother will be traveling with you."
"She's alive!"
"Yes. What made you think that she wasn't?"
"Cause you never talk about her."
Every time I brought her up, he would completely change the subject. I always assumed she died.
"I.......me and your mother," He paused," it's complicated."
I felt a mix of emotions I couldn't place. I didn't know what to think.
"Don't let the past rule your future; you might end up regretting it."
My father left the living room, and I was left alone with my thoughts.
I don't want to meet her or anyone from that side of the family. She never visits or sent me a letter. She has done nothing at all but I might regret it if I don't go. What should I do?
I finally came to a decision. Taking a deep breath, I went to find my father. He was in his room, lying down. I sauntered to him, gripping his arm.
" I.....I.....I want to see her."
" Are you sure?"
"Yes."
I've made up my mind. I can't go back on this. If I do, I know I'll regret it. I mean, I am afraid but I have to take this risk.
My dad smiled.
"Just try to talk with your mother when you meet her. Okay?"
"Okay."
"Pack your bags."
"Where am I going?"
"Japan,"
"Japan! Who lives there!"
"Your grandfather lives there."
