Chapter 17
So Rebecca and I were doing some fairly menial missions, the easy ones so we could just chat at the same time; get to know each other more. And then suddenly an event mission popped up in front of us.
The thing with event missions is that you can’t choose them, or for that matter, unchoose them. They just appear, and you have to do them, or escape and not get any of the rewards for doing them. And event missions give the best rewards, because they are rare missions, and the monster drops from them are the best.
“Do you think we can do this?” I ask my elf wife, knowing for a fact that we are a high enough level to complete it, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be really hard.
Because, the event mission we stumbled upon is to slay a fucking dragon. We’ve never fought dragons before; there’s like one normal mission with dragons involved, and that isn’t even to kill a dragon. The only way to kill a dragon in this game is through event missions.
“W-we should be able to complete it, what do you think? Should we r-run away?” Rebecca asks, and I think for a moment. Whatever we decide, we have to do it quickly, because we’re on an open road and I bet a bunch of bandits will appear at any moment.
“I mean, we could? I’d finally get to try out my passive, heart of the dragon warrior. Do you have enough mana and spell slots available?” I check with the mage, and she nods determinedly. “I have p-plenty. Are we doing it then?”
I glance at her for a moment before nodding. “Yeah, sounds good to me. Have you got time though? My class tomorrow is in the afternoon so I don’t have to worry about however long this quest will be.”
Rebecca just flicks her cherry-blossom pink hair over her shoulder, giving me a confident smile. “My shift is in the evening, s-so I’ll be fine.”
Nodding resolutely, I take Rebecca’s hand and teleport us to the Domain of the Dragon King. The event mission lets us enter, and suddenly we’re walking through the Dragon Caves. It’s a pretty rad place, and it’s kind of sad that most players don’t get to see this.
We just have to kill one dragon and bring back a souvenir to some NPC, that part doesn’t really matter; we can just scavenge the body and put it in our inventories. Suddenly the dramatic fighting music starts playing, and Rebecca’s enemies inbound alerts us at the same time to the attack.
“One enemy, probably the d-dragon!” She calls, and I nod quickly, pulling out my twin swords. We’ll need to be agile and fast when fighting a dragon, because it can practically one-shot us with its poisonous claws and fangs or its fire or ice breath. Or lightning actually, I don’t know which element this one uses.
Stepping further into the tall cave, the area is lit up with blue ice as the dragon roars at us. Cool, ice dragon it is then. Rebecca and I dive to one side, hiding behind a handy boulder. Nice that this game designs levels to be fought in.
Rebecca quickly starts preparing to cast a spell, a fire one by the looks of it, which will help melt the dragon’s ice scales. I grip my swords, nodding to Rebecca briefly before charging around the side of the boulder.
I slip around the dragon, slashing at the scales where Rebecca directs her fire attacks to melt them, so that I’m able to actually do some damage to it. We keep doing this, and eventually we learn the sequence of the dragon’s attacks: it whacks its tail, then it claws, and then it does the breathy thing.
The time intervals between the attacks change, but the longer the fight continues, the easier it is to predict the next attack.
The dragon manages to claw me a few times, but luckily my passive saves me, as half the hit points come back to me as healing, and heal the couple of points Rebecca loses from getting caught in the tail attacks.
It takes hours of us slowly chipping away at the dragon’s health until eventually it falls to the ground. Happened at the perfect time too, considering that Rebecca was starting to get low on mana from the sheer number of high energy spells she was casting, and the fact that we were both a little low on HP.
I jog over to Rebecca, giving her a high five before leaning against the cave wall. “This took way longer than I thought it would; how much HP did that have in the end?!” I ask, moving towards the dragon carcass and scavenging it.
It never fails to amuse me how I just wave my hands over the body and suddenly it just poofs into my inventory, but hey, games wouldn’t be nearly as fun if they were realistic. I mean, I literally just fought a dragon with my elf wife who casts magic, so. Not the most realistic.
I sit back from my computer for a moment; playing an intense fight for several hours really wasn’t a good idea on my wrists. Getting up from my desk chair, I find my medicine and take a dose. Sitting back down, I see a message from Rebecca in the game, which I missed.
‘Sorry had to go suddenly, something came up.’
I hold my breath for a moment- is he…is he ok? Quickly grabbing my phone, I send Beck a text.
Griffin🦅: is everything ok?
He responds abut fifteen minutes later, when my painkillers have finally kicked in.
Rebecca🌸: Yeah sorry, my sister called me crying, she’s ok though, just quite stressed.
I bite my lip; that sounds pretty fucking stressed if she’s reduced to tears.
Griffin🦅: I hope she’s doing ok. She’s younger than you right?
Rebecca🌸: Yes, Katie and Liza are twins. Katie is already feeling better, she just needed some reassurance that she’s doing really well :)
Griffin🦅: oh cool! And that’s great that she’s doing better. You sound like a really good big brother :)
Rebecca🌸: Haha thanks, I hope so anyway. My family is very tight-knit, and I really treasure my sisters
A tight-knit family. That’s the sort of thing I’ve always wanted, but I know that it’s hopeless wanting that kind of thing with my own family. After all, if my parents don’t even love each other, how can I expect them to love me?
