A white silver sedan is seen going full throttle down a highway weaving back and forth so as to not hit any of the debris or abandoned cars left strewn all along the road. Its engine starts to sputter as it's struggling to go faster than the speed it’s currently going until suddenly the car comes to a screeching to a near halt with the driver turning left onto a road leading to a small city.
“So, how is it?” Iris looked at Alan with a confused look in her eye. She looked at the minestrone and then back to Alan.
“Is it supposed to taste like this?”
“Huh? What do you mean?” Alan was confused by what Iris was talking about but when she pulled the minestrone away from him so he could taste what she was talking about he instantly knew she wasn’t being serious.
Iris couldn’t help but start laughing as Alan got up once seeing through her. “You really need to lighten up, you know that. How do you expect to make any form of relationship with an attitude like that?’
“How can I when I have to deal with the twins and now you.” Alan opened up the electric box and started to flip multiple switches before grabbing two thick wires and plugging them into another electric box below the first. “And besides that, how can I be lighthearted and not take things seriously when Literal monsters and out and about.” The lights first flickered before turning on completely after Alan flipped a switch on the second electric box.
“We may not have gas and running water in the future but at least we have power again.”
As Alan went back over to Iris to see how badly her legs were injured, he told Luna and Joshua to get the flashlights they hung up on the ceiling down before they ate lunch. Turning back to Iris and then to her legs he couldn’t help but give the faintest blush.
“First time?” Iris asked with a clear understanding of what she said and the context behind it.
“Sh...Shut up, alright. Another sentence like that and I’ll just amputate them.”
“Ok ok no need to get all mad about it,” Iris said while still laughing
Giving him a moment to inspect her legs, Iris couldn’t wait any longer.
“Though to be honest I Didn’t think you were into that kind of thing, Alan.”
Alan stood up and walked to the kitchen and started rummaging through drawers.
“Um Alan, what are you doing?”
“I need to cut your pants off.”
“What!? Why can’t you just take them off?”
“Simple. Don’t want to make it worse.” Alan found what he was looking for and started walking back over to Iris. “spread 'em.” Iris went red in the face and slapped Alan as hard as she could without moving too much so she doesn’t feel more pain in her legs.
“What the hell was that for!?! What am I not allowed to make comments like that but you are?”
“Damn straight.” Iris folded her arms and looked the other direction away from Alan.
*Why is she such an anomaly still after all these years. Though questions aside where do I cut her pants up to? Her knee could work but what if it's her femur as well?* “Hey Iris, are you ok with me getting rid of say, this much?” Pointing to the middle of her thigh with the handle of the scissors.
“Sure fine whatever just get it done and over with.”
Alan started cutting her pants from the ankle up and once at the middle of Iris’ thigh he started to cut around but without wanting to make the injury worse or have Iris feel any more pain he didn’t cut all the way around but instead halfway on one side of her leg and then jumping back to the original cut to cut the other half with the cut portion now only hanging on by a few inches that were under her leg.
Just as he was finishing up on cutting the other pant leg Alan could make out the sound of four sets of feet coming through the front door but couldn’t remember hearing anyone knock or using the keys. Afraid it would be a monster Alan picked up Iris and motioned at the twins to get back and follow him to the sub-basement. Once in the sub-basement Alan brought the three to a storage room and told them to not make a move and that he would come and get them if it was safe but until he does they are not allowed to make a sound or leave the room. “What are you going to use as a weapon if it’s..” she hesitated for a moment before finishing her sentence as she didn’t want to freak out the twins. “... if it isn’t our parents?” Alan looked around the storage room to see if he could use anything but saw nothing by PVC and buckets of screws and nails. No tools were in sight other than the scissors he was still holding. He opened the scissors and pulled each handle in opposite directions causing the scissors to break giving him two knife-like weapons. “I’ll make do with this so just stay here and don’t worry about me.”
Alan crept back up to the main basement level peering around the corner before going into the small hallway that turned into the open main room. He quickly snuck to the end of the hall now peering around the corner and seeing nothing. He was about to run out and lock and shut the door to the basement if it already wasn’t, but before he could even step foot out the hall he heard the sounds upstairs reach the basement door and open it.
Alan's heart was beating so heavily and fast that he couldn’t help but his clenched hand with one part of the scissors in it, over his heart as if to try and muffle the sound of his own heart as whatever was upstairs was now coming downstairs.
