Edgar was settling in with the other engines. He still believed he was better than the other engines, but just needed experience. Arnold was in the station work shed,, getting ready to take a train. He was grumbling, not wanting to leave for any reason. Edgar then came into the sheds with him.
“I have finished all my jobs for the day,” Edgar said, “I can finally have my rest.”
“Actually,” said Arnold, “There’s one more train that you need to take.”
“What train is that?” Edgar asked.
“My train,” Arnold said, “I’ve seemed to have broken down, could you take my seven o’clock goods train?”
“I could do that,” Edgar said, “Where is it?”
“It’s over in that siding over there,” Arnold said, “It’s going to a small town in the branch line, it’s just a few logs and an oil tanker.”
“I can do that,” Edgar said, “I’ll be back in an hour.”
Edgar took the train along the line, tired after all of his work. He finally arrived at the small town, and stopped to be unloaded.
“Just wait here,” said a workman, “The tanker is going to be emptied, then we’ll start moving the logs at the end of it.”
“I can come back in the morning to collect them,” said Edgar, “It’ll get dark soon.”
“You have a headlamp, don’t you?” said the workmen, as he walked away.
Arnold was leaving the station, as Timothy came in.
“Have you seen Edgar anywhere?” Timothy asked, “He’s supposed to take a train early tomorrow, so he needs to get to the sheds.”
“He was sent to do my job,” Arnold said, “I broke down.”
“Then you’re going to have to take his train tomorrow,” Timothy replied as he left the station.
Edgar was almost sleeping in the small town, when the workmen woke him.
“It’s time for you to go now Edgar,” said the workmen, “Get going you engine.”
“I need a rest,” Edgar said as he left.
Edgar was rushing along back to the big station. The branch line eventually connected with the main line, so Edgar would have to stop. The signal was red, and the points were set against him. Edgar was rushing along tiredly, and didn’t see the signal. He bumped over the points and derailed.
The next morning, Arnold was taking Edgar’s train. It was a simple supply train of mostly fuel, with a car for workmen at the back.
“What’s that over there?” Arnold’s driver asked.
“I think it’s Edgar,” Arnold replied.
There Edgar sat, with his two front bogey off the rails. His eyes were closed, and he slept. When the crane me by to bring him back, he stayed asleep the whole time.came, it took Edgar home. It wasn’t until the next morning that he woke up.
