This skit worked on a player and character level. The player didn't realize that you should recognize the sending spell voice given that you know the person, and further he liked to play his rogue as a paranoid "sleep with one eye open" type, so he freaked out in-character when this happened.
Further you only have a set amount of words to use during the spell, so as they bickered the DM deemed that the spell cut out halfway through the message lmao.
