Awesome! Kjell, one of Ariane's older brothers, told him to make friends with at least an incubus or a succubus. They had amazing teleportation ability that would be invaluable.
Once he was no longer distracted by horns and wings, he noticed the other people who came with him. There were two women, one looked a lot like Mitzi's black Barbie while the other must be a Wakandan royal, who instantly sighed in relief seeing the new pile of baggage. Florian stopped whining and just mesmerized at them.
"Hi there," the Barbie approached the Cunnings. "This is room 516, isn't it?"
"Yes," answered Mrs. Cunning.
“Finally, the right room,” the Wakandan royal laughed.
“It’s only been seven years ago since I lived here but I already forgot how to navigate this building," the Barbie laughed. "Ha-ha. Hi, I’m Callia, this is my son, Castor, and my mom, Cavanna."
The Cunning men were too shocked to hear it that they just shook her hand. She’s probably just 23 years old, and her mom was probably just 29, and she had an 18-year-old son? How?
Luka's family helped Castor to unpack while they’re telling each other about themselves. Castor had such a cool and friendly family, although Mrs. Cunning kept her husband a little farther away from Cavanna and Callia. Once they're done, the family left for lunch while Mrs. Cunning tried to contact Tante Annemarie.
They waited in front of the elevator while talking about Florian. According to Callia, incubus and succubus babies were born as teenagers. No wonder why they adored Florian so much.
Then the elevator bell rang, and the doors were opened. And both Cavanna and Callia could swear they had never been in the same room with that many platinum blonde haired people.
"You are all here!" shouted Mrs. Cunning. She walked into the elevator and hugged the woman with exact same blonde hair and blue eyes. The woman was in the elevator with a buff man with blonde man bun and beard. There was also a tall girl that’s definitely their daughter for her similarities with both of them.
"Oh, hey, this is my roommate, Castor, and these are his mom and grandma," Luka introduced the clueless boy to the girl. He's a bit annoyed that they're not as shocked as he was before. "This is my cousin, Ariane, and her parents, Tante Annemarie and Onkel Lasse."
"Nice to meet you," Ariane shook his hand.
"And you," replied Castor. "Such beautiful eyes you have there."
Ariane’s eyes were as yellow as a sunflower, courtesy of the ancient Norwegian werewolf lineage from her dad. Never in her life had anyone praised her eyes, especially a young man that looked like a male model from a high-end perfume advertisement. So she blushed and said, “Thank you.”
The children went to the assembly hall to register for student orientation while the parents roamed around the reception room. After they took their student ID pictures, they regrouped with their families outside Olympus Hall. Castor's family, however, didn’t come along for the family luncheon. They said they had their own kind’s dining hall. After they vanished, Tante Annemarie told Luka that incubi and succubi didn’t eat like them. They had a special way to eat, but she didn’t tell how. Ariane even only grinned mysteriously.
The main dining facility was called Hemera Hall. It’s a three-story building with a complete glass wall facing the Main Lane. Bountiful human food were served on four different counters, starting with the delicious, healthy all the way to refined culinary. There were also other ‘types’ of food such as flowers, seeds and pieces of corpse.
After lunch, the parents went to the main building, Nyx Hall, to attend parents' reception. Luka and Ariane sauntered down the quad where the clubs and organizations were opening booths and inviting new students to join them. Castor teleported right beside the cousins when Ariane had taken almost all the brochure the clubs gave her. She said she wished to join at least five organizations.
"Wow, five organizations?" asked Castor. "I'm not even sure if I can attend all of my classes."
"Exactly," Luka laughed. "Are you sure you're not gonna join a sorority?"
"I prefer to join academic organizations than social," she flicked her wavy platinum blonde long bob. "I know I'm not the brightest of the bunch, so I have to level up with that."
"Does that mean you're gonna join a fraternity?" Castor asked Luka with a worried face.
Luka studied the expression on his face, "Yeah. Is that not okay?"
"No, it's just..."
"Not for everybody," a voice came from behind them. They turned around as another man with platinum blonde hair rocking an all-black outfit came closer. "Sorry I'm late. I just chased some minister of Belgium for dinner."
"Castor, this is my brother Kjell," introduced Ariane. "Kjell, this is Luka's roommate."
"Ah, my Delta roommate was also an incubus," Kjell shook Castor's hand. "I wonder if he's here now. Come, let's visit Delta’s booth."
"Are Lenz, Jørn and Sepp not coming?" Luka followed the taller guy as he drifted through the people, as if he knew where they're heading although he just arrived.
"Nah, they’re too old," answered Kjell. "The current actives probably don't recognize them anymore. Hell, I don't think they even know me, but we'll see."
Kjell stopped in front of a stand with red decorations. There was a sign that said Delta Pi Kappa. Some of the boys wore colorful t-shirts, some others didn't. Three grown men were seen talking with each other. One of them took a peek at Kjell and shouted, "Kjetill Bjornevik, my man!"
"What's up, Mr. Secretary?" Kjell walked past the boys to give the men a hug. "Where the hell is Zazzie? He said he'd be here."
"He's coming," answered the man with a snub nose. "Come, you should meet the current president."
"Yeah, wait, Luka come here," Kjell gestured at Luka. Then he took a look at his roommate. "Castor, do you wanna rush for Delta? I can put in some good words if you want."
"No, thank you," answered Castor politely. He stayed on the sideline with Ariane.
Luka joined his cousin and shook those men's hands. Apparently, they were Kjell's underclassmen who came as alumni representatives. They introduced the cousins to the president, a short and chubby Asian guy named Wayne whom they called Moley. He was an alien of Nexafarian race. Luka didn't know what that meant but Kjell looked impressed.
Ariane was gossiping with Castor when someone whispered, "Look, I think we got a legacy."
"Do my eyes deceive me or is that the fifth Bjornevik brother?"
"Shit, man, you're right."
"If Moley gives him some kind of privilege because of his family, I'm going to give him actual hell."
What? Ariane turned around, ready to say something back, but they were no longer there. She followed the voices that became inaudible. One of them coming from a red-haired brawny guy who quickly disappeared behind other people.
After five more minutes of mingling, a handsome man arrived at the scene. He was Kjell's former roommate, Zazrem. Kjell told the other guys that he's going for 'dinner' while catching up with his best bud.
He introduced Zazrem to Ariane and Castor before saying goodbye for he would return home after he finished his dinner. Ariane asked something in Norwegian then Kjell answered while shaking his head. Then he suddenly hugged her and Luka.
"Listen to me," he ordered. "You have to take care of each other. You're lucky you're in this together. Lenz was with Vigdis when he was here, Sepp was with Ove and Steinar, Jørn was with Frode, but I was alone. Although Lenz was more like rivaling with Vigdis and Sepp found better family in Delta, you'll feel less lonely with cubs from the same pack, you know what I mean?"
Luka and Ariane traded glances. This would be the first time they lived without their family and the first time they attended a school together. It’s going to be challenging, but exciting, nonetheless.
"Erebus is the source of knowledge, and four years will pass without you realizing it, so you better ask, absorb and try everything. Do not regret it."
Then Kjell stood and walked away with Zazrem while showing them a peace sign.
While watching him went, Luka commented, "That's the guy who took you to watch Saw when you were six."
"Hm, I know, I think it’s the air," Ariane narrowed her eyes. “People suddenly spit sense when they breathe this educational air.”
Finally, it's time for the family to go home. Hundreds of people gathered on Olympus Hall front yard as the sun began to set. Cavanna and Callia just teleported themselves back to wherever they were from, while the Cunnings and Bjorneviks had to wait for their turn to get a ride home. After one more 'I'm gonna miss you', the Cunnings crossed over the vortex while the Bjorneviks plunged into a magic circle.
Ariane didn’t give Luka time to acknowledge his parents’ departure. She grabbed his arm and pulled him back to the club fair. The quad was less crowded now that most of the students were still waiting to say goodbye to their families. They could check out more interesting booths. There was an open space in the middle of the quad, just past a group of singing guys. A bunch of people in varsity letterman jacket were scattering around it. A guy was talking to a crowd who were sitting on the grass. Luka slid closer to hear what he was saying, straying away from Ariane who was listening to some girls from makeup club and Castor who was entranced by the jugglers’ club.
"Our pitcher here is the best in America," proclaimed the big dude. He pointed to a guy in baseball cap who was leaning on his baseball bat. "He can throw the ball so fast that no one is able to see. If we are allowed to do that, we would win every championship there is. But that wouldn't be fair, would it?"
The crowd sniggered.
“Now who wants to prove me wrong?” asked the big dude. “Anyone wants to volunteer to hit the ball?”
Some of them raised their hands. The big guy started pointing out at them.
"Not you, you're a warlock, you'll cheat. Put your hand down, Bozo. You... nah, there won't be any challenge. C'mon, we need someone who can challenge Lightning's speed. You! No. Hey, you, dude with the white hair."
Luka pointed back at his own nose. "Me?" he asked.
"Yeah, yeah, come here," the big dude beckoned to him.
Luka skipped past the crowd into the area.
The big guy asked someone to write something on the ball to prove it to be the one and only ball they’re using while Lightning himself gave the bat to Luka.
"Are you ready?" the big guy wore his helmet and pad and squatted behind Luka.
"Yeah," answered Luka.
Then Lightning struck the pose. You know, the pose every pitcher does before making the throw. Then he threw it. There was nothing but wind before a thump was heard behind him.
"Too slow," taunted the big guy who opened his glove. The ball was already there. The crowd gasped. He's right. Not even them, the mighty supernatural beings could see the ball's movement. The crowd gave them applause, even when the warlock whispered that they had teleporting power.
"Can you do it again?" Luka turned to Lightning as the big guy was closing the show.
"You sure?" Lightning asked. "I don't wanna hurt your feeling."
"I think I saw the ball," Luka's words put the crowd back on the grass.
"Let him have it," told the big guy. He threw the ball back to Lightning.
Lightning and Luka were ready on their positions. Then Lightning threw the ball. It disappeared again. But no, there it was.
Luka took a heavy swing, followed by a loud thud. The ball flew in the air. The crowd cheered.
"Oh, man," the big guy took off his helmet as the ball left them.
But the ball flew too powerfully that it only lowered on the other side of the quad. No one there saw what happened, but some girls screamed. There were buzzing.
"Oh, shit," Luka threw the bat to the grass and ran as fast as he could into the crowd.
Some people were kneeling, circling something; or someone. He pushed them aside as he squeezed through.
In the middle of the circle, there was a guy with his mouth open and a hanging jaw. Blood dripped down his lips to his checkered scarf. His left cheek was squashed. It was dark purple and almost torn apart.
"Shit, hey, man, I'm sorry, I'm sorry," Luka kneeled beside him, then he took his arm and put it on his shoulder. "Come on, let me take you to the nurse."
But the guy refused. He pulled back his arm and sat back on the ground. He shook his head, his jaw slowly followed, telling him that there's no need. Then he looked up to the crowd and signaled them to go away.
"Are you sure?" Luka asked. "I think you need to be treated right away."
Again, he shook his head. He waved his hands, telling him it's okay. He pointed to his cheek. Luka just realized that the dark purple started to change color.
"You should at least..."
The wounded guy squeezed Luka's shoulder and pulled him closer. He stared at him. Again, using his hands, he told him to go away.
Luka was just trying to understand why he insisted for him to leave when a sensational force grabbed him by the throat. In mere seconds, his feet left the ground. He dangled helplessly while gasping for air. Both of his hands struggled to get his neck off a cold, gripping hand that belonged to a guy with black hair, pale skin, silver eyes and angry elongated canine teeth.
Vampire.
