Minty Swirl. I can already tell this day will be terrible, he thought.
"I knew you'd be lazy waking up," Minty Swirl sneered, "You'd probably be in the student hollow had Queen Penny not made you a guardian. Well, you're up for patrol today." She sniffed and walked off to Orange Blossom, said something, and they walked out of the clearing.
Snow Shine just couldn't believe such a self-absorbed unicorn ever became a guardian! But it was too late. Not much could be done now. He sighed and walked into the clearing where he learned who he was on patrol with.

Blueberry Twilight's dark brown eyes held great excitement as they walked through the forest. Snow Shine couldn't wait for his first patrol, and it seemed like Blueberry Twilight was excited too. Violet Leaf had said that she was very friendly and enjoyed the company of others. Guess Blue's the best choice for a patrol, thought Snow Shine, maybe this day won't be so bad after all. Say, I might be—
All of a sudden, a growl sounded. Snow Shine quickly refocused on where he was. There was a giant brown bear lumbering towards him, baring its sharp teeth. He felt afraid and unsure, until Blueberry Twilight called, "The Beat-Up spell, Snow Shine! Quick!!" With all the strength he had, Snow Shine generated magic from his glistening white horn, and hurled it at the bear. It levitated in the air, and then the magic went to work; beating up the restless bear till it fled. Snow Shine felt proud when he realized he not only protected himself, but the other unicorns from this potential danger! Content, he walked with Blueberry Twilight back to camp.

"So you used the Beat-Up spell on the bear, and it fled?! That's amazing!"
It was the end of the day, and the unicorns were eating their final meal. The guardians gathered around Snow Shine as he told the remarkable story. "I was surprised myself, Orange Blossom," he replied. Orange Blossom's pale-green eyes twinkled in wonder. "Boy, do I wish I was on patrol with you instead—"
"Two young guardians, on patrol on their own, causing trouble? Not on my watch," Minty Swirl grumped, flicking her tail irritably. Snow Shine's ears drooped with disappointment. Don't mind Minty Swirl. Blue said she's grumpy because of her age, Orange Blossom whispered to him, and his ears perked up again.
Violet Leaf appeared, nodded to Minty Swirl, and, for once, she grinned. They padded out into the forest. "Um...where are they going?" Snow Shine asked, unsure who he was asking in particular. Orange Blossom and Blueberry Twilight Blue exchanged a glance, and Blue finally said, "I'll tell you later."

Snow Shine didn't realize he had fallen asleep until the sun's rays were streaming through the den entrance. Despite Minty Swirl's cruel remarks, Violet Leaf had put him and Orange Blossom on the same patrol. "We need you to make sure no horses are crossing the horse borders," he had said.
Snow Shine felt this jittery, happy feeling about being on patrol with her, and he didn't know why. Well, she is a nice unicorn, he had to admit, maybe that's why. "Hey, Snow Shine!" Orange Blossom chirped, "Wouldn't it be better if we patrolled the general borders instead?" Snow Shine nodded in agreement. However, they did what they were told and went to the horse borders.
