After rushing to put their shirts back on, Joshua rolls off the side of the bed and hits the floor with a soft thud as Rory jogs to go answer the door.
With his body still buzzing and head still in the clouds, Joshua can't help but giggle for being so childish. When he first heard the knocking at the door, he immediately panicked and felt the need to hide. This whole situation brought him back to that one time in high school when his mother had caught him making out with another boy in his bedroom. Joshua didn't end up getting in trouble for having a ‘friend’ over, but instead he was punished for skipping school that day.
And that's how Joshua came out to his mother—by accident.
"Joshua…? Where the heck did you go?"
Before opening the door to see who’s standing on the other side, Rory looks back at an empty bed. After he whispers for Joshua to come out from wherever he’s hiding, Rory chuckles as Joshua sticks his head up to peer over the side of the bed, a goofy expression painting his adorable face. Rory shoots Joshua a puzzled look and asks why he’s on the floor. Joshua doesn’t respond, he simply waves Rory off and lays back down on the ground.
He’s so weird, but cute at the same time... Rory smiles to himself and opens the door.
Due to the height of his bed and the way that it’s positioned in the room, Joshua is completely out of view from their visitor. And even if that weren’t the case, Rory wouldn’t have had an issue introducing Joshua to his best friend Derek. After all, Rory and Joshua were just hanging out, just up here talking and chilling in Rory’s bedroom. Bros being bros or whatever. Totally isn’t a big deal.
Or at least that’s what Rory repeatedly tells himself.
"Can’t say I’m surprised to see your ugly face.” Rory jokes with his friend while dapping him up. "You always show up to bother me at the worst times."
"Dude, I'm sorry! But I've got to take a massive piss and the bathroom downstairs has the longest fucking line that I've ever seen," Derek says, his tone whiny and desperate. "Can I pretty please use your bathroom real quick? I promise I won't get any piss on the floor like last time. I swear I’m not as drunk as I look…or sound."
The pitiful expression on Derek's face is what ultimately makes Rory give way.
Derek can be such a pain in the ass sometimes, but Rory loves him like a brother and wouldn't trade him for anything. Rory no doubt feels sympathy for his friend; however, he also can't help but want to curse the blonde out for having such terrible timing.
"Try to make it quick, alright? I was kind of in the middle of something important,” Rory says while stepping aside.
Derek thanks Rory before rushing inside and making a beeline for the bathroom. Meanwhile, Rory's comment about being busy 'with something important' has Joshua grinning like a lovestruck idiot over on the floor.
"Important like what, bro? You're up here alone. What the hell could you be so damn busy with on a Friday night?" Derek yells from the bathroom. "And another thing, who throws a big ass party only to end up spending most of the night locked away in their bedroom? You’ve never been one to shy away from a party, and especially not one that you’re the host of." Derek pauses to flush the toilet and then wash his hands. “If something is bothering you, I’m here if ever you want to get it off your chest. You know that, right?”
"I know. And I promise it isn’t anything serious," Rory replies, impatiently waiting by the bedroom door. "Hey, can you make sure no one else comes up here tonight?" Rory says after Derek exits the bathroom. "I don't care if there's a line for the bathroom downstairs; I don’t want anyone else to come up here. I meant what I said about this floor being off limits."
"Yeah, yeah. No problem," Derek says. "So, were you on an important business call or something? Is that why you look so fucking triggered right now?" Derek jokes. Rory lies, nodding. He'll say anything at this point if it helps get Derek the hell out of here. "Well in that case, I’m sorry for almost beating down your door. I'll leave you to get back to handling your business, Mr. Businessman."
Rory rolls his eyes, laughing. "Thanks."
"Oh! Almost forgot to tell you this—your girl Hailey has been looking for you," Derek says. Rory visibly cringes after hearing the name of his clingy ex. "She bumped into me downstairs and started asking questions. At one point, she got super pissed and then stormed off when I didn’t have an answer after she had asked me where you had run off to. Homegirl has got it out for you tonight, so be careful.”
“Thanks for the heads up,” Rory says. “I've purposely been avoiding her. I can't deal with her whenever she gets drunk. She likes to start shit and argue, and I just am not up for any of that tonight." Rory lowers his voice, not wanting to vent too much or too loudly to Derek because he isn't sure if Joshua can hear them clearly or not. "Listen, if you run into her again, please don't tell her where I am. Try to keep her downstairs until I come back. I shouldn’t be up here too much longer."
"You got it, bro. I'll handle it," Derek replies.
The two say their goodbyes and Rory is soon flooded with relief after being able to shut and lock his bedroom door again. When he turns back around, he smiles and calls for Joshua.
"You can come out now," Rory says. "We're alone again."
