What? That's way too much detail! Should he do the same? Should he tell him who his father was and what he did for a living?
Matthew suddenly burst out laughing. He laughed so hard until his nose turned red. "Oh, I can't hold it, I can't hold it," he uttered between his laughs. "I was joking, okay? My dad's just a gardener. I'm a nobody. So, you're Luka?”
Other than his rare eye condition, this guy's facial feature was also a bit of a curiosity. Up front, he looked like every other young white male you could meet in The States. But when he smiled, he looked Asian. His side profile showed a Middle-Easterner. And under different lights, he looked like a Latino.
“Not the type to talk out loud, huh?” Matthew rang in his mind again.
"No, I just..." Luka blinked. “I just realized that this is how it feels to have my mind blown.”
Matthew howled again. Then stopped. "Do you mean I was too breathy when I speak to your mind?"
"No, no, I mean that was awesome, man."
"Thanks. I guess you haven't encountered many non-terran powers, have you? 'Cause they can be like straight out of comic books."
Oh, he's an alien. Now he understood why Kjell was so impressed with Moley back when he had introduced him to Delta. It must be because all aliens had some kind of superpower.
"No kidding," Luka looked down. He nodded to his white loafers. "Are your shoes some kind of high-tech ale... non-terran device?"
"No, that was also me," answered Matthew. "I can do a bit of telekinesis."
Whoa, this guy was really cool. It wouldn't be so hard for him to get a bid, because who wouldn't wanna have a telekinetic and telepath in their gang?
"Fraternity group eleven," the man who sat on a foldable chair read his tablet. "You may start."
Fifteen guys, including Luka and Matthew, left the flock toward the first fraternity house on their list. On their way there, Luka and Matthew got to know the other guys of the group. Matthew did the mind talk to tell Luka what he thought about all those guys. Luka held himself from laughing, listening to Matthew's ridiculous ramble.
They arrived at the first house. It was a typical neo-Palladian mansion with all white paint and round bushes in front of the porch. The name plate on top of the door said, 'Tau Nu Omega'. A guy with a flipped baseball cap told them to go in. The moment they stepped in, a six-foot-tall guy welcomed them and gave each of them a high five. He showed the way to the living room, where eight other guys were having a good time, drinking and watching basketball game.
This was bad. Luka didn't know anything about basketball. How was he gonna start a conversation? Matthew, in the other hand, jumped right away into the sofa and asked about some players Luka had never even heard about. Thank God somebody gave him a cup of drink and started the conversation for him.
The pink faced guy asked if Luka had played sports in high school and Luka answered yes, he had played hockey before he came of age and inherited werewolf's superhuman strength. The guy clearly pitied him. They kept talking more about sports before Luka moved on to other guys. Funny, they were also more interested in talking about sports. The fourth-year students were taking internship in the 'real world', but if they were here, they'd be talking about sports too.
Most of the actives belonged in the varsity team. After the baseball accident, Ariane had told Luka that the only race who could join the varsity teams were shamans and shapeshifters, because their abilities could not be used for cheating.
And then, a familiar guy came into the living room and called him out.
"Hey, you," he pointed at him. "You're the guy who hit Lightning's throw the other day!"
Oh, great, it's the big guy from the club fair.
"Fancy to see you here," he gave him a high five. "You're the first freshman who saw his throw. If you don't hit it that hard, the baseball guys are willing to give you home. It's a shame you're a werewolf."
Luka didn't know how to respond to that, so he just said, "Thanks, man. Hey, I never catch your name by the way."
"It's Jackson," he shook his hand. Great grip. "Jackson Valmor. Pledge educator of Tau Nu Omega, captain of varsity baseball and soccer."
"Wow, what an ass," Luka heard his own and Matthew's thoughts in his head. He glanced at the alien who didn't even look away from the TV.
The minute they got out of the house, those boys started badmouthing Tau. Secretly. Away from the shapeshifters who were also in their group.
"This is where my ability is the handiest," Matthew's voice rang in Luka's head. "So you're the guy who made that scene that day, huh? I gotta say they let you go pretty easily. I kind of wished to see a fight there. Thank God it didn't happen, am I right?"
Luka just grinned.
The group stopped in front of the beige mansion. It had that French chateau look, the kind that Mitzi kept bugging their parents to spend the winter in. Of all the houses he had seen, this was the most luxurious one. Too bad all first-year students must live in Olympus Hall. They read the name plate, 'Gamma Theta Pi'.
"This is it!" said one guy. "Their alumni always end up being successful businessmen. Let's see if that's what they're gonna be boasting about."
He's right. They kept bragging that most of their alumni worked in Fortune 500 companies on high-ranking positions. Their philanthropy events had never been held nearby. It's either in LA, NYC, Miami and other big cities in and out of USA. They talked big about how they could get them a mid-level position in any company once they graduated. Even their active members were the sons of mighty tycoons all around the globe.
Mu Pi Upsilon was the next house they visited. It had that Gilded Age flair to its dark gray Victorian mansion. This must be the most beautiful house when it snowed.
Their active members were a little like the Tau guys, but instead of sports, their interest lay on academic achievement. Matthew was quieter in this house when he wasn't diverting the academic topic.
They were appealed when Luka mentioned about his aspiration to be a veterinarian. The feeling was mutual when Luka found out that they gave out 10 scholarships for non-Greeks as a part of their philanthropy program and 2 scholarships for their own members as their education reward. Too bad they were obsessed with grades. This was the opposite of his parents' view on his education. Grades were not their benchmark.
The next houses were not as interesting as the first three houses he’d visited. In fact, he more enjoyed watching Matthew selling himself to those fraternities. Other than telepathy and telekinesis, his conversational skill must be his other superpower.
After coming out of Epsilon Nu’s house, they arrived at a Florida style house with the name 'Beta Alpha'. That's the fraternity that Finlay's cousin belonged to.
Luka got in, had a chat and waited until 20 minutes passed. He glanced away when one of them was passionately speaking about their alumni program and his eyes met a pair of orange eyes.
Mohan.
The Indian in black shirt came toward him. "Hello, pup," he said. Pup? Really? "What a surprise. I didn't expect you to be interested in Greek life."
"Yeah, my cousins told me to try it out," Luka replied. "They're all the members of a fraternity."
"Which fraternity?" asked Mohan.
"Not this one, that's for sure," answered Luka. He didn't want Mohan to think he preferred one fraternity over the other. If Beta Alpha turned out to be a better fit, he would gladly join them instead.
"Being a legacy isn't going to cut it," said Mohan. "You have to have determination to be among us. Determination to bring betterment to the world. Or at least, to yourself."
That I do have, Luka thought. Instead of saying that, he just nodded.
"Tell me something," Mohan put his other hand across his body to support his hand that held his cup. "What do you think about racial disharmony in our supernatural world?"
No one had ever asked this question before. Funny, after what happened with him and Raoul, and Finlay and that witch girl, Luka truly wanted to speak his mind about this. And now Mohan just gave him his chance.
"I think it has to stop," he answered. "As supernatural beings and as humans, we need to stick together and help each other to fight bigger threats to our existence: the destruction of Earth and the downfall of humanity. If we still have those suspicions and stereotypical assumptions toward each other, a simple mistake can lead to an all-out war. I think that's the reason why we have Erebus University, to teach us about living together in harmony."
Mohan raised his glass, appreciating Luka's thought. "Good answer," he commented. "Now have you visited Theta Epsilon's house?"
"No."
"That house is full of vampires," Mohan's information gave Luka a shock. "Now as a werewolf, would you consider joining them?"
Shit. If all the vampires acted like d'Auvrechers his answer would be no, but not all the vampires were like him, right?
"Of course," answered Luka. "If they prove to hold the same value as I do, there's no reason not to."
"Then you'll take orders from them?"
"Yes."
"Protect them as your own brothers?"
"Yes."
"Take the risk of being accused as a traitor to your own race?"
Luka chortled. "It's just a fraternity, it won't come to that."
"What if it will?"
"Then we're all in dire need to stop this disharmony and the only reasonable thing to do is to show solidarity and stick with my vampire brothers."
Mohan smiled. He tapped Luka's shoulder and hooked his neck, "Come on, pup. I'll show you around."
The tour with Mohan raised Luka's spirit. After finding out that Beta Alpha gave out 7 scholarships each year, had great alumni relationship, also valued loyalty and brotherhood instead of anything else, Luka thought that this fraternity was worth a try.
There was a gold cup in their trophy room with the carving that said 'Agónas Dŷnami Champion'. So, these guys were the violent frat boys Castor were worried about. Would they pressure him to join the team since he’s a werewolf?
"That's like the only fraternity that might give me a bid," Matthew chimed in when they were on their way to the next house. "Might."
"I thought you'd rush for Mu Pi Upsilon," teased Luka.
"Oh yeah, how did I forget about that one?" Matthew sarcastically replied.
They visited a few more unmemorable houses until they stopped in front of a cape cod house. The name sign said, 'Theta Epsilon'. So this was the fraternity full of vampires that Mohan had mentioned.
"You're scared?" Matthew apparently was still connected to Luka's mind. He tapped his back, "Don't worry. They won’t do anything stupid on an event like this.”
He entered the house first. It was also a large house, but unlike the other houses, it was quite dim. The actives were just sitting around the living room, drinking, smoking and playing cards. A loud reggae music was coming from the gramophone on the corner of the room. The air smelled of cigarette and pungent; damp and old. They didn't ask that many questions nor did they brag about their fraternity. Turned out, that fraternity wasn’t as scary as Luka thought it would be. It’s just full of lazy vampires.
They visited a few more houses before the eighth house made the whole group paused in their front yard. A silver plaque was put on the car track that would lead them to the house. It said, 'Iota Alpha'.
"Do we even have to get in?" said a guy. "These twats only accept warlocks."
"It's mandatory," the other stepped over the silver plaque. "We just have to visit once for 20 minutes. Now come on."
Luka and Matthew followed the others, with Luka also stepping over the plaque. It's silver. He's going to get a serious burn if he stepped on it.
They paused again as their eyes feasted on the house behind the trees. It's a three-storied modern contemporary styled house, complete with tremendous windows, glass ceilings and gray paint, looking like the ultimate bachelor pad. Their stomach dropped knowing that they would never get a chance to live in that mansion.
With less excitement, they entered the house, signed the guestbook in the foyer and found some guys in matching gray cashmere sweater having a chat by the bar. The soft orange lights turned green as if they were right in the middle of a Hollywood villain scene.
A guy with slicked back undercut turned around. His high eyebrows went higher as he muttered, "Group eleven. Not a single warlock. What a shame."
One minute later, they found themselves sitting in the living room facing the Iotas. There was no question, no bragging, nothing. No need to say anything because they wouldn't be able to rush for Iota and the Iotas wouldn't accept them.
Matthew looked around and got his attention on a mini cauldron. "So what's in here?" he asked as he opened the lid. Blue smoke came out and hit him in the face.
Next thing they knew, the group was running toward Delta Pi Kappa’s house. Luka followed them with a human-sized tarsier wearing Matthew's clothes that couldn't stop dancing. That tarsier was Matthew.
It’s almost ironic
that Luka cared so much about Matthew’s shoelaces but not his own. His
shoelaces went loose in the middle of his run, and he stepped on them. Luka
plunged forward with Matthew still dancing on his back. They both stumbled into
the house, rolled together like a snowball and stopped in the middle of the
living room where all the guys were having conversations with other group of
rushees.
