The sun was about to set. They had been walking for a while, on their usual way back, but slower.
Felisa now had the not-so-heavy camping bag as her brother carried their fallen company on his back. He claimed to be perfectly fine, though the sweat on his forehead showed the opposite.
And the girl… Felisa can’t help but check on her every minute or two. She looked terribly sick, her breath was so low and the burnt parts of her weird clothes were not a good sign either. Not to mention the bluish color in most of her hair… Was that also a symptom of a disease she had?
Despite all this, the girl still managed to make herself “unaffectable”. Even on the merge of death, she unconsciously kept some kind of a strange barrier, which they cannot see or sense, around her and that indicated how awfully skillful she was. So powerful, thought Felisa, yet almost dead.
“How the hell did she end up like this?” Felisa murmured to herself.
“I have no idea,” said her brother between his sharp breaths, “we should ask her once she wakes up.”
Felisa reached for the girl’s face to examine her breath again. Only to feel her skin burning even more than before.
“Damn!”
“Don’t worry Fez, she is alive.” said Rehan, adding quietly “At least for now.”
The possibility of someone dying gave her goosebumps. Even if the subject was someone she has never seen before. Felisa felt scared for the girl, and useless for can’t doing anything to help.
“Shall I switch with you, brother?”
“We’re almost there but hurry up home and tell what happened. I’ll be right behind.”
He stopped to catch his breath and fixed the girl’s awkward position as Felisa quickened her steps. She quickly lightened herself, and her load and any other things surrounding her before running. The dust that her feet raised with every one of her steps stayed in the air till Felisa was out of the range. She was... overflowing with the energy but never really succeeded to control it.
How unwieldy, she complained as she made a clumsy attempt to skip over the fence on her way, Rehan could’ve done this with his eyes closed. Her big brother was a lot more capable when it came to directing the energy in many forms, which he would proudly call “commanding”. Felisa never really understood that how someone can use his energy on only some specific parts of the targeted matter? It was already hard enough to direct it alone!
Like the dying girl’s invisible barrier.
“MOM, DAD!” shouted Felisa just before reaching home. She tossed the bag aside and knocked on the door as fast as her pounding heart till her father opened it in a rush.
“Fez? Why are you back already, where’s Ren?”
“Wefoundagirlshelooksawful Rentoldmetogoahead she’sdyingandgettingworse pleaseyouhavetodosomething!”
“What? Hey hey, slow down.” said her father as her mother brought a glass of water. “Take a deep breath first.”
“We found a dying girl!” said Felisa without touching the water. “Ren is carrying her but he's tired like hell so hetoldmetogoaheadand-”
Her father grabbed her shoulders. “Where’s your brother now?”
“The small bridge, he should be around there!”
“Darling, I’m heading there. You and Fez prepare here.”
Her mother nodded and crouched down, looking right into Felisa’s eyes. “Tell me everything.”
Felisa described every little detail about the stranger. Her mother calmly listened and asked her to cool as much water as possible and bring it along with some alcohol while she rushed to prepare her medicinal equipment. She would know what to do. She had the most healing hands she ever knew. But would that even work on the girl though?
Felisa slapped her cheeks to kill off the bad thoughts. There was no time to get more anxious so she headed down the cellar. She quickly cooled some water from the stock, a little too much that caused the surroundings to heat up but not that it was a prior concern, and grabbed everything she was tasked with.
She found her mother in the guest room arranging some bandages. They were almost finished when her father and brother returned with the girl. They quickly laid the girl down as her mother touched her wrist.
“She...” the mother of always knowing what to do was speechless. Shit. This was bad, but deep down Felisa knew this would be the outcome.
“Alright!” her mother inhaled deeply to pull herself, “Her pulse is not too bad. For now, we’ll focus on the burnt skin and her fever. Fez, dear, you help me change her clothes, and you two” she pointed towards the guys “leave, get some rest.”
They carefully take her burnt clothes off without touching the damaged skin much. Her mother cleaned and dressed the wounds while muttering to herself. It was a habit of hers to think out loud when things get serious. Whilst Felisa tried to reduce the girl’s fever with cold wet towels.
“It is all up to her now.” said her mother after making her final checks. “I can’t help in any other way. But, God! What a remarkable talent..”
Felisa totally agreed.
