When my sister was doing her residency in Richmond, Virginia, I would visit her for multiple weeks. The one thing that always caught my eye were the cotton candy colored sunsets. For some reason, the skies felt bigger there, much more expansive. Whenever I think back to those days, I smile and a warm happiness fills my mind.
What thought makes you happy?
There's a recent push to reframe 'time outs', away from the punishment aspect and towards the idea expressed here, a time to calm down, reflect, and ground yourself (no, not angry parent grounding you style =P). I've heard it referred to as 'time in' or 'break time' or 'calm time'.
I've seem some really neat permanent forts in kids rooms that is the kids safe space, they know when they're getting overwhelmed they can go to their fort and do whatever nondestructive thing they need to do to calm themselves. My son is too little to be able to self regulate in that way, and he's not very verbal yet so it's hard to understand the root of his frustrations sometimes. Still, we're making progress and he knows he can come to us when his emotions are getting to be too much for him.
And in answer to your question, the idea that I get to watch my son grow into a full fledged person makes me happy =)
