Binding is the ceremony of officiating an alpha and his/her beta as a Pair. The decision as to whether or not a pair becomes a 'Pair' officialy, is made by a council of elders and leaders of the community after judging their performances in duels. This requires the alphas and their betas to undergo rigorous training so that they can establish certain amount of sync and flow between their magic.
Wielders often look for certain quatlities in their alphas/betas. They might demand certain level of skill or for wielders who deal with a particular element. For instance Aratas often prefer to be the alpha in a pair and choose Sinatas - wielders of air, for betas.
Binding demands utmost loyalty, respect and devotion towards one's partner. Once bound, the alpha's primary obligation is towards his beta and the same is true for his/her beta. Their relation is something that develops over the years and is build on trust and getting through hard times together.
Bonding 101
It's got nothing to do with binding. Bonding can happen between any two wielders - they may or may not be a pair. When it comes to binding, weilders often choose their partners strategically but bonding is very much like love.
It is when the spirit of magic in one wielder falls in love with that of another. The bonded couple may or may not be a 'Pair' or romantic lovers.
However, romantic love can trigger bonding. So can promises and sacrifices.
While the obligation to one's pair in binding comes from duty and loyalty, in bonding it comes naturally. Magic calls for magic and it is tough to resist it. As you can imagine, this can be really troublesome in situations where one is forced to choose between the two.
