Darkness is often related to mystery and the unknown or rather fear of the unknown--what lies beyond our understanding and control. The painful and sometimes sinister parts of life are seen as 'dark times', when we stumble seeking blindly for the light that would mean our safety and security. The light is much more desirable than the dark in that regard.
Desirable... and enviable.
Whether it be riches, love, fame, comfort, stability, family, power... The light is enviable enough that people go through great lengths to obtain it. Strangely enough, the light is so blindingly ...wonderful.. that some don't even realize how dark their actions to possess it become over time.
