For me, what keeps me in the present moment is noticing the small wonders of the world for long periods of time. For instance, watching a leaf blow on a tree. If you observe it for multiple minutes, you can begin to appreciate it for it's beauty and existence. I find that doing so allows me to stay grounded during hard times.
I have a mix of tricks, doubling numbers (1, 2, 4, 8...) and seeing how high I can go, halving numbers (1, 0.5, 0.25, 0.125...) and seeing how low I can go, counting by sevens (7, 14, 21, 28...), the 5 senses thing (5 things you see, 4 things you hear, etc.).
