"Wait he has a boyfriend? I only saw the pride flag sticker on his phone. Huh." Sofi replied, a little happy for the mysterious Chinese landlord
"Yeah he's a nice dude, they're perfect for each other, totally in love." she sighed
"Ew, love." Sofi teased as they crossed the street, the cool wind blowing against them as the grey floating clouds tampered with the sun's inner rays. "I'm just saying, love was a social construct invented by divorce attorneys so they could make more money."
"I mean..." Ash laughed as she got out the keys to her car "You aren't exactly wrong. Love is..." she took a deep breath, trying to find the right words "Love is a complicated little piece of shit."
"I'll pretend I know what you're talking about, the only thing I know about love ya from shitty rom coms. That you made me watch mind you." she teased as Ash opened the car door
"Look, rom coms are amazing and I will absolutely not take your criticism." she snapped back playfully, shutting her door from the outside wind as turned off the radiatior to a reasonably warn temperature. "Well, the ones without toxic masculinity and have the female love figure being in a very sexual tension filled relationship with her best friend"
"Yeah those are an exception. To be fair, any type of gay sexual tension makes anything better." Sofi argued as she put her seat belt on
"That, Science Girl, is most definitely true. Without gay sexual tension well, life would be incomplete." Ash pointed out as she started the car, hearing the rumbling of the engine "Wanna get gas after or before we go shopping?" she asked a little annoyed at herself, pointing over to the fuel markings.
"Oh we can go later. We got enough time anyway." she muttered, gesturing over to the actual fuel itself as the car started moving
They drove in silence for a bit, not one of those long uncomfortable silences, but one of comfort and relief. Friendship isn't based upon finding that person you can talk with all the time, it's finding that person you can sit in silence with for a bit and never feel bad about it.
Well, talking also tended to be pretty important "So, how's your essay coming along?" Ash asked, shooting her friend a glance as Sofi looked out of the window and into the grey and golden streets of New York.
"Oh it's actually going really well!! Sure, there's practically no information about white holes but it's really all just about the theory of them. Which... Well, I had to end up making myself." she giggled, readjusting herself on the car seat.
"Science Girl if you end up winning the Nobel Prize you better share some of the money with me, cause damn girl you are SMART." Ash teased, to be fair, it was inevitable that she'd win the Nobel Prize if not for the patriarchal notions found in the science community.
Sofi couldn't help but let out a laugh "Ash don't worry, I'm sure you'll get one yourself for like... Something in writing."
Ash couldn't help but snort at the notion as she stopped at a red light "Me? A nobel prize? Honey... no." she laughed, shocked that the thought even entered her mind.
"I'm just saying, that poem you wrote about Autumn? It's amazing!!!" Sofi reasoned, not wanting to make her friend feel unloved
Ash couldn't help but let her cheeks turn a subtle pink as tried to get a response, complements from anyone about her writing were really just amazing. If anything, it was one of the main reasons of why she actually wrote "Aww... You're sweet." she sighed as she halted to a stop "But anyway, we're here."
She turned off the car and took out the key before bracing herself for the cold outside. It wasn't freezing or anything, but not exactly the temperature to go out with shorts to the beach. Well, maybe for Jesse, but they were certainly quite the exception all things considered.
"Okay, so what do we need?" Sofi asked as they went into the store, taking out a cart as they headed off to the aisles
"Okay so we need spoons, cereal, uh..." Ash started to say as she thought over the list in her head "Some fruit, uh flour, vegetables, you know the usual." she shrugged as she pushed the cart
They went off into the grocery store as they bought whatever the fuck they needed. And some more of course, despite Ash's requests, turns out Sofi needed a microscope
"You have tons everywhere!!!!" she insisted
"Yeah but this one's prettier." she replied, already too late as she put the microscope in the cart
The most Ash could end up dying was a sigh and rolling her eyes, although it had to be said, the microscope was quite pretty.
"So only use two spoons if you're gonna die a project, got it?" she asked Sofi as she paid for theirs at the checkout line, already holding onto one bag.
"I'll do my best. Spoons are needed in large quantities Ash!!" she teased, a smirk on her face as she took the other bag and they walked back to the car
The sky had turned a brighter shade of blue since they came back from the store, grey clouds no longer tainted the sky as the sun let it's rays strike down on the Earth, a cold wind brushed by, ignored by the radiant sun from.
"Okay so before we head over to my place I gotta fill the tank, you wanna go anywhere else?" Ash asked as she turned on the ignition before bending down and cuffing her jeans quickly
"Uh no not really. Let's just fill up the car." she replied as she put on her seat belt, closing the door as she did so.
With a nod they went off to the gas station, it was close nearby and the conversatio was filled with small talk and all.
"Okay we're here Science Girl. You wanna get out or should I?" she asked gesturing over to the door
"Yeah I'm staying, it's way too cold outside." she pouted, herself on the seat as Ash rolled her eyes
"Honey did you see the sun outside???" she asked teasingly as she left the car.
She couldn't help but notice a familiar face and motorcycle, black as the night.
Scarlett's.
She dived right back in, a face of panic streaking across her face.
"FUCK"
