Mabel woke up in the middle of the night feeling hungover. And crampy. Oh no… When she removes the sheets she spies some blood on the bed. I guess it’s early this month. She groaned and thought about how Aiden might react. He hadn’t tried to bite her after the first time. But he was prepared and usually drank what she assumed were a few gallons of cow’s blood. I should tell him. After a trip to the bathroom.
She stands in front of his door, listening for any sign of movement. She knocks gently, “Aiden?” No response, “Aiden can I come in?” More silence. She, stupidly, decides to go in. To make sure he’s ok, you know? She tries to convince herself that it’s ok to totally intrude on his privacy. It wasn’t but she convinced herself anyway! Maybe I am a little crazy...
The room is pitch black when she enters and she swears she hears a dragging across the floor, “Aiden?” she whispers. She hears a low growl and sees his glowing white eyes again. Bigger and closer. With the same look, he gave her so many months ago. She stays in place this time. A little cautious, “Are you ok?” He doesn’t answer. He just stares at her. Her stomach churns and her hand begins to look for the doorknob.
As soon as she opens the door he’s behind her in an instant. Pinning the door down so she wouldn’t leave. When he sees she won’t run away from him he wraps his large feathered arms around her and nuzzles into her neck.
A whimper slips out of her when she feels his fangs skim her neck, “A-Aiden.” He pauses and his fangs are no longer on her. But he held her tight like he was afraid she’d disappear at any moment, “Do you want me to stay?” He takes her to his bed. Gently laying her down next to him But not facing him. He kept his distance, realizing she was shaking. She reaches for his hand and brings it around her waist. She waits until his loud ragged breathing is steady. A sign he has fallen asleep.
She risks turning around to get a look at him. It was too dark to see. But she felt him. Instead of stones and gems across his body, there were feathers and bone. Her curiosity got the best of her and she reached for the curtain above the bed. Hoping the night sky would let her see him. He takes her arm and pulls her back to bed. Now gently cradling her. She gives up quickly and falls asleep with him.
The next morning she finds a note on the kitchen table:
I’ll be gone for a few weeks.
Feel free to do as you please while I am away.
I’m sorry about last night.
Aiden
