It's 2am when Axl hears his door creak open. The light from the flashlight blinds him a little. He shields his eyes and groans. "What is it?"
The person standing in the doorway is Space. He's shaking. "I had a nightmare and I can't wake up Jax."
Axl sighs and gestures for Space to join him. "Turn off the flashlight, darling." When Space doesn't comply, Axl pries his hands from flashlight and switches it off. "Nothing's going to hurt you, I'm right here." Axl's eyes seem to glow in the dark. He notices Space focusing on them. "Do you want to tell me about the nightmare?"
Space shakes his head. His body is still shaking and he feels awfully cold. He curls into Axl and buries his face in his chest. Axl wraps him in a hug and gently rocks him to sleep.
While he's making coffee, Jax comes into the kitchen seeming tense. "Axl do you know where Spa-"
"They're in my room asleep. They had a nightmare and couldn't wake you up."
Jax relaxes. Panicking isn't much like him. His way of panicking is very different then most people's. Axl knows this but Space doesn't. "He didn't disturb you did he?"
"Nope. He just curled up into bed with me and fell asleep." Axl offers a cup of coffee to Jax. He takes it from him and starts dumping in a bunch of sugar.
"One day your teeth are gonna rot," Axl comments. Jax just bares his teeth at him. They're slightly yellowed and a little crooked but in perfect condition. He's never had a cavity in his life as far as Axl and Space were aware of.
"I'm going out," Jax says, grabbing his keys from the bowl on top of the book shelf near the front door.
"Then me and Space are coming with you. We'll have to wait for them though."
Jax grumbles. "Fine. I guess you two can come."
Axl smiles. "Great! We can do borderline law breaking like we used to do in high school."
The door to Axl's room opens and Space steps out, rubbing his eyes.
"Morning darling," Axl says. "Want some coffee?"
"No thanks." Space yawns and doesn't bother to cover it.
Axl hands him a mug of hot chocolate and an energy bar. "Guess what?"
Space hums. His way of asking what.
"We're going out today. All three of us."
"But I have school tomorrow," Space whines.
"We're not gonna stay out that late darling," Axl says.
"Mmm... Ok. Jax is ok with this?"
Jax and Axl exchange glares. "Yeah I'm fine with it," Jax reluctantly says.
Space smiles. "Ok let me just get dressed." He dissapears into his and Jax's shared room.
Once the door closes Axl glares at Jax yet again. "Don't think for a second that you're leaving him behind."
"I didn't want to leave just them behind. I was going to leave you both behind. I just want to be alone. Is that too much to ask?" His tone has an edge to it.
"I know exactly what you'd be doing with your 'alone time.' Probably buying another pack. You know that it's just going to make things worse for you. You could die!"
"That's kind of the point," Jax says bluntly.
"You really wanna do that to us?"
Jax stays quiet. Space come out of their room and is dressed in a baggy brown sweater, grey jeans and a white button up collar can be seen from under their sweater. Axl notices them and before they can ask anything he interjects.
"You ready to go?" Space nods eagerly.
"I don't remember when last we all hung out together," Space says as Jax locks the door behind them. "I think it'll be fun!" Space starts flapping their arms up and down.
Axl ruffles their hair. "Mhm."
"We're gonna need to take the bus though," Jax says.
Three friends just trying to make it by. In high school they were constantly getting into trouble, all of them just looking for a distraction. Wether it was walking on telephone pole wires or breaking lamppost lights, they'll take any distraction over facing their problems.
Now having moved out and in together they have responsibilities and work to do. At least those are distractions.
But when old troubles ressurface will they be able to overcome them or will they fall short trying?
