The Adventures of a Powerless Mage

Fire Element, Part 2

Fire Element, Part 2

May 22, 2021

"Why did you say 'fireball'?"

"I'm not sure."

As Sir Royce walked away, Brennan let out the long breath he had been holding. He was also very happy, as Sir Royce did not notice he was controlling his mana. The only advice he was given was to relax more as he cast his spell, as his nervousness was causing him to limit his mana output.
Of course that wasn't really the case, which meant Brennan had been able to trick him into thinking that the limit of his mana was very low.

Brennan continued to practice controlling his mana, which proved easier said than done. Even though he already did it once, he had few successful attempts at controlling it. While it never burst into huge amounts like he had feared, it was always far from the amount he had intended.

After practice ended, they all grouped together, and Sir Royce did an overview of everyone's performance.
"Great job, everyone. The average level of this class is very high, and as expected the overall performance was amazing. Some struggled a bit with controlling their mana output," He glanced at Brennan "While others did an amazing job." He looked at Angela and the girl named Katelyn.
He went on to explain the next segment of the class, where they would hold simulations to determine how good everyone's reflexes, judgement, control over mana, and knowledge over different spells were.

Following Sir Royce, everyone walked over to a large building nearby. It had a rectangular base with a half-cylinder roof, and was colored the same white color as all other buildings. As they walked through the large steel doors, everyone felt the strong lingering mana residing inside. The building was filled with different instruments for testing, including a shelf with different colored mana level testers.

As they entered, another class was leaving. Brennan saw Oliver in the group, who gave him a disdaining look, meaning it was the earth element class that had just finished their testing. Since there were so many different classes, each class had their own type of testing. For combat it was the fights, for government it was a pre-test, for magic theory it was the homework, for beast dissection it was the first project, and for elemental magic it was the mana and general ability tests.

They lined up against a wall, and Sir Royce explained the steps in the test.
"First, there will be a holographic reaction and awareness test. You will have fake spikes shot at you from random directions within the area, and you will get 1 point for every spike you dodge. The second test is a target practice and mana efficiency test, where you will have to shoot at far away points using the fireball spell, controlling the amount of mana you have to specific numbers. You will get 1 point in that category for every fireball that successfully hits the target with the exact power level. The last and final test is a simulated battle, where you will fight with low level mana beasts with varying abilities to test your situational adaptation using different spells. Of course we respect your privacy, so you will stay outside with Mr. Alex as we do 1 on 1 testing."

After everyone went outside, Sir Royce started calling students in. Since they had the entire rest of the day to do this, they could take their time and still finish testing in one day. Almost all the students were extremely shaky and nervous going in. There was clear relief in the students every time they came out, whether they did well or not.
Finally, last as usual, it was Brennan's turn. Everyone was sitting in their respective friend groups, discussing what they thought their scores were. As Brennan walked into the building once again, he felt a stronger magic signature than before, a sign magic had recently been used. He walked over to where Sir Royce was, and started the test.

He walked over to a large hollow cylinder, which opened for him to enter. Immediately after entering, Brennan noticed the numerous holes all around him. From what information he overheard from the people outside, the spikes got faster over time, and would not deal physical damage. They would hurt if they hit him in order to throw him off, but he shouldn't be afraid to make risky maneuvers.
The test started, and Brennan dodged as many as he could. He had to constantly find where the spikes came from, since they were all around him, which proved to be very difficult. Unfortunately, every time he was about to get used to the speed, it increased. After he got hit once, the hits snowballed, and Sir Royce stopped the test.

The second test was very difficult, especially for Brennan. He had to hit targets from increasing distances, and at mana intervals of 5, all the way up to his max. That meant he would have to hit a total of 10 targets to get a full score. He was able to control his mana for the first 2 targets, but afterwards, it was hard to get the number exact. He also struggled to aim correctly, especially while trying to accurately lower and control his mana.

Finally it was time for the last test. Considering how short the past 2 tests are, and how long people took, this test was probably a lot longer. Survival was the most important part of hunting expeditions, and since most magicians became hunters, this was an important part of school.
Unlike the other 2 tests, this one would take an enormous amount of space. Holographic low level beasts would be summoned, and he would have to defeat all of them without leaving the space or dying. Of course since it was a simulation Brennan wouldn't actually die.
As Brennan stepped into the simulation area, the air froze. On the other side of the area, blue lights flashed, and 3 figures stepped out, releasing a suffocating air that made it hard to breath.
