As a little girl, Marie, remembers spending most of her free time at her grandfather’s house without the rest of her family. Even though her family is quiet and respectful; they can also be the direct opposite. Her family consists of her mother, sisters ( Alexzandra and Christina ), brothers ( Kole and Derek ), and herself. The last memory she has of her being at her grandfather’s house is over a year ago and she will never forget it.
It starts out as a normal day but, when she gets to grandfather’s house; she notices a young man in the living room. He is pale as a ghost and has shiny raven black hair. She notices that he is wearing a suit and tie when her grandfather introduces him to her. Her grandfather says that the young man’s name is Josiph Luncast and he is there to help him with his work. She says okay and goes up to the guest room she always uses. The room is Victorian style with almost sky blue walls. The bed is a baby blue canopy bed. The floor is a dark sky blue but smooth to the touch. The end table holds a book, a lamp on top, and some of her training gear.
Her grandfather would take her into his study to show her what they were up against. Before they head out on a job. She always carries a weapon wherever they go. Be it a job or not. She likes to make sure they are safe. Her grandfather has three simple rules to follow and they are:
1. Know what you are up against.
2. Have a weapon or two with you at all times.
3. Get the job done well.
She remembers the job she did with her grandfather. It was a vampire job. The vampire is hard to find at first but they find her in an alleyway. The vampire is hunting. The vampire looks no older than Marie but when Marie’s grandfather sees the vampire, he takes action. The vampire dodged everyone of his strikes. The vampire looks at Marie and starts to come towards her. Marie stands her ground and surprises the vampire by driving a blessed dagger through her heart. The vampire steps back and turns to ash. She picks up her dagger and she hears her grandfather laughing. He says “remind me to never to tick you off or scare the crap out of you”. They both laugh and start to go back home.
Marie,” A distant voice says, “Marie.”
“Yeah mom,” Marie replies looking out the car window. She then looks into the rearview mirror. Looking at her sisters. Alexzandra has black short boyish cut black dyed hair, is skinny but muscular. She looks upset as she messages on her phone. She seems to be getting more and more upset as well. She grumbles and Christina sighs. Christina tries to calm Alexzandra down and looks at her phone also. Katrynia is playing a game on her phone. Derek has his head buried in a book. He always has his nose in a book. Their mother doesn’t know about Alexzandra being a Lesbian, Katrynia being Transgender (MTF), or Derek being Gay. Their mother, Sarah, is focused on the road that is leading them to the house. She seems to be tired.
“We’re here,” She comments as they pull up to the house. The house is as she remembers it; except for the unchecked mail and the lawn that has not been mowed for a long time. It also is beginning to look a little run down. To explain further her grandfather’s house is a two story home. It looks small on the outside but is enormous on the inside type of two story home. It is painted an off white color but it's chipping away now. The windows look tinted with how much dirt and grime is on them. The lawn is usually well kept and good looking. It is now like looking at a jungle. The mailbox that is usually standing straight up, is now leaning to the side. Marie sighs as she gets out of the car, looking the place over as she does. They start to take all the stuff, from the car, inside to put up. Marie grabs all her things to put in her room and she touches the key that hangs around her neck.
“Marie, there are two rooms locked upstairs and I was wondering if you knew where the keys were,” Alexzandra asks with an exhaust but irritated sigh.
“Yes, but that is for me to know and you to find out,” She says with a slight smirk. Alexzandra follows Marie to one of the locked doors. Marie pulls out the key and takes it off. She then unlocks the door.
"You had a key all along," She growls out angrily.“
"To my room, yes. To grandpa's study, no," Marie answers as she watches her sister storms away. She walks into the room and sets her stuff down. After getting all her stuff up to her room, she remembers something. She remembers her training gear in her end table. She quietly and sneakily checks it. Most of it is there. The rest must be in her grandfather's study. She decides to go get some air after she has everything put up. She walks out to her grandfather's garden. It's her favorite place. Her grandfather would call it her little kingdom. The garden, even though it is overgrown with weeds, grass, and everything else; it still has a wide variety of flowers, trees, plants, and some are even from different countries. There is a small pond that has a waterfall. In the pond are several fish of wide variety that somehow survived this long. The plants, flowers, and trees Marie's grandfather used for making potions and doing spells. Marie would end up staying out there all day until she fell asleep, when she was younger. She would fall asleep near the pond, under a tree. She would wake up in her room when she was younger. She goes back to her room and sees some of the training gear out of the hiding spot. She quickly and quietly puts them back. As she does she remembers using her training gear with her grandfather in the field behind the house or while they were working. He would make sure she knew everything before teaching her something new. Her grandfather would say that "it us their little secret that they shared". He would tell her that it could save her life some day. When she is at his house he would take her to work with him from time to time. She sits on her bed looking around the room making sure everything is in order. Then she sees an envelope, with her name on it, on her bed.
Dearest Granddaughter,
Sorry for leaving you so suddenly but it couldn’t be helped. Joseph is waiting for you in my study. The key is in the envelope.
Always have fun and stay safe
Your Grandfather
After she reads that she starts crying but still heads towards her grandfather’s study. She tightly grasps the key that she pulls out of the envelope. She unlocks the door and gently opens it. She looks into the room. The study has 2 desks. A large dark wood and a smaller lighter wood one. It has several book shelves lined with books upon books. There’s books sitting in stacks on the floor by desks as well. There are a few books on the desks as well. The books range from spell and potion books to information books on supernatural beings. There is also a very large blue plastic tote sitting in the middle of the room. She enters the study wondering where Josiph could be. She opens the tote and sees a nailed shut coffin surrounded by water. She tries to take a step back in surprise but ends up tripping. She hits her elbow on the coffin when she falls. Right after she hears a knock in reply.
“Okay, who is in the creepy coffin,’ She asks towards the coffin while rubbing her elbow.
“It’s me, Joseph. Help me,” He answers quickly.
“Hold on, I’ll find a hammer to get the nals out,” She says while looking around the study for one. She finally finds one by her grandfather’s desk, the larger desk, hidden beside it and behind a small chest. The chest looks very ornate and has several gems and precious stones. It also has a keyhole as well. She grabs it and goes back to the casket.
“Okay, let’s get those nails out,” She says as she starts to remove the nails.
“Okay, last nail,” She comments after a while of pulling nails out.
“Thank you, I’m indebted to you,” He says, standing by the desk with a bow.
“Okay? I’m glad to see you, Josiph,” She says while hugging him in relief.
“I’m glad to see you too,” He says, hugging her. Feeling relieved from being free and seeing her.
“I’m sorry about your grandfather,” He comments as he holds her because she has started to cry.
“What happened,” She asks, looking him in the eye.
“Your grandfather got the attention of the worst type of people ever,” He comments, not wanting to answer her.
“Who would that be,” She asks while wiping her eyes.
“We can speak more about it when we both have clear heads,” He says unhappily when he finally answers her. They start to walk out of the room and then she realizes that her mom has no idea about Josiph. She also has no idea of what he is.
“Wait, my mom doesn’t know about you or of what you are,” She quickly says while trying to push him back into the room.
“What? Who all is here with you,” He quickly comments letting her push him into the room.
“Well, there’s my mom, my sisters, and my brother that came with me,” She answers while looking to see if anyone is coming down the hall.
“Well, how am I going to walk around the house then,” He asks while looking to see if anyone is coming down the hall.
“Well, how am I going to walk around the house then,” He asks while looking through some of my grandfather’s old papers.
“We can say you are a butler my grandfather had and what are you looking for,” She comments as she turns around and watches him rummage through some of the papers that belonged to her grandfather.
“Well, I’m getting rid of the vampire evidence,” He says, trying to find the papers.
“Why,” She asks, heading towards her grandfather’s desk. Still watching his every move
“So, if your mother or siblings come in here, they will not find it,” He replies as he starts to search the small desk.
“True, but they can’t come in here if it is locked,” She comments as she carefully opens a drawer.
“Still, it is better to be careful than sorry,” He says looking at her when he hears the drawer open.
“That is true but how are they going to get in here,” She asks while pulling out the papers he was looking for. She slips them behind her back.
“They could sneak in. What are you hiding behind your back,” He asks, stepping towards her with a small smirk.
“Nothing,” She replies as puts the papers in her back pocket.
“If that’s true then you wouldn’t mind giving me another hug then,” He says with a mischievous smile.
