When I made it back to the ship Marie was a sobbing mess. That led me to only assume the worst i squashed down below deck to see Arva keeping the poor boy alive but barely. After some time we were able to revive him, but not fully.
“ Who’s gonna tell him?” Arva spoke as we sat by his bedside.
“ Well I’m not gonna tell him.”
“ What! Why not!”
“ It was your plan so you should have told him.”
“ But you got the herb!”
“ People get plants all the time!”
“ But you help me!”
“ Exactly I’ve already done so much telling the poor thing is the least you could do.” I say dramatically.
“Evera! You tell him your Captain!” She shouts this time.
“ Exactly and as said Captain I say you should tell him!” I say loudly, turning up my nose with a playful smile.
“ Tell me what?” Me and Arva freeze upon hearing the boy's voice.
“ Uhh I- Gotta go bye!” Arva shouts before running above deck
“ You arshole Arva!” I shout after her before turning back to the boy moving my hair out of my eyes. It had grown quite a bit since I had cut it.
“ What are ya suppose to tell me?” He says looking up at me. Nothing but pure innocence was held in his eyes.
“ Do you remember what happened before you woke up here boy?” I asked
“ Ya, I was trying to get some food for me and Marie like always but this time I got caught and he started beating me when Marie showed up. Then everything goes black Ma’am.” I hum and nod my head.
“ You died. Me and Arva were able to bring ya back but not all ya.” I say closing my eyes and leaning back in my chair. Seeing how he would take this will be interesting.
“ What do you mean? I feel fine Ma’am.” He says fear now seeping through his words.
“ I give him a half-lidded glance before getting up and grabbing the candle before pouring the scorching wax down his chest.
“ WHA-” he stopped mid scream with the realization. “ I can’t feel anything.”
“ No. And you won't ever again, Nor will you taste, or smell like you once did.” I stop putting the candle down before continuing. “ This is your price of a second chance at life.” I say now looking him in the eyes.
“ Why?” he whispers.
“ Why what boy speak up?”
“ My name isn’t ‘Boy’ it’s Sparrow!” He snapped, getting annoyed with my nickname for him.
“ Ok little lad, why what?” He gives me a sharp glare before speaking.
“ Why would you save me?” He says angrily
“ I figured you were too young to die.” I say with a shrug of my shoulders.
“ And who gave you the right to decide that! Who gave you the right to play God!” He shouts at me.
“ Who gave me the right?” I pause to tap my chin pretending to think. “ Well no one, I gave that to myself. You know selfcare is important.” I tell him with a smile.
“ What if I didn't want to be saved! Did that thought ever cross your mind, you selfish hag! You should have left me for dead!” He shouts once more a fire in his eyes like no other.
“ And leave Marie all alone? From what I'm told her parents are dead and she has no family, leaving her all alone. She only has you here? Did you think of that boy? Who would you leave behind if you were to leave?” I say. My voice a low growl. All anger in his fetchers disappears and fads into guilt and worry.
“ where is she?” He finally speaks looking up at me.
“ Come on, She will be happy to see you.” I helped him to his feet and to the deck. Once we make it up there I see Arva by my door. She nods over in the other direction, we look over to see Marie crying at the edge of the ship.
“ She’s crying, what do I do?” Sparrow asks me with a voice full of sadness.
“ Comfort her.” I say quietly.
“ How?” He whimpers slightly.
“ Let's start with a hug.” I say with a light chuckle.
“ With what?” He says looking up at me. I stare down at the boy dumbfoundedly. As Sparrow and Marie talked and comforted each other I found my mind wandering to James. His crew member is dying now because of me. I know I should probably be relieved it makes my job easier, to crush him, but I don’t feel as such. This isn’t the victory I want. Not like this. I rushed down below deck and grabbed the remaining herb.
“ What are you-” Before Arva could finish her question I was gone. Heading to James ship.
“ James, how are we gonna heal Bastian now!” I hear one of James' crew members yell frantically. I'm sitting in the crows nest watching all of them below.
“ I don’t know.” James mumbled, I'd never seen him look so defeated before.
“ What do you mean ‘You don’t Know’ You're the captain! What the hell happened on that mountain!” Ace yells
“ I DONT KNOW!” James finally snaps and just as he does so I drop the bed and it lands between the two arguing men.
“ All of you get inside now.'' James says. They don’t make any moves to leave.
“ NOW! Get the herb to Bastain!” He yells and with that all of them rush below deck to help their fallen crew mate.
“ Come down from there Cornelia.” James says. I can’t distinguish any emotion in his voice. I slowly climb down and face James even though his back is towards me.
“ Why’d you bring back the herb?” He questions quietly.
“ I told ya i was just borrowing didn’t I” I say with a light chuckle trying to relieve the tense atmosphere.
“ Don’t jest with me Cornelia. You said it yourself after what I did, after what I put you through, anyone in their right mind would have just kept the herb so why bring it back!” He said whilst turning around to face me. I can now see the tears threatening to fall from his eyes. I attempt to move forward but stop myself.
“ It didn’t feel right.”
“ What?” James says his voice cracking slightly
“ I want you to suffer James for what you have done to me, In my eyes that is winning in this little game we have created.” I laugh slightly before looking him in the eyes and continuing. “ But it didn’t feel right to win like this.” I finish that go to leave.
“ It doesn’t have to be like this, You brought the herb because you know deep down you still love me and i still love you. We don’t have to fight each other Cornelia, We can be happy again.” He calls after me.
“No we can’t.” I say over my shoulder watching his face fall.
“ I’ll get you back Cornelia.”
“ I’d agree with you, but then we would both be wrong.”
