Blinding Lights

Invaders

Invaders

Jun 07, 2021

“Minjae!” Joonie shouted. Straight in my ear too, so loud I was momentarily afraid I’d go deaf. “Min! Come on, please wake up. Where’s your phone?”

He could’ve as well shouted to the walls, since I only turned over and pulled the pillow over my head. I didn’t even know what time it was, but for sure it was too early to wake up. Way, way too early. At least considering I had stayed up half the night.

“Ugh, it’s the comeback day. You better,” someone else, possibly Chris, said. I didn’t hear that well from under the pillow. Not that it mattered for long, since that said someone hopped on top of me, crushing me under his weight.

Finally, I woke up somewhat, while struggling to toss the annoying maknae out of my bed. I guess he let me, as I surprisingly managed to do that with only a little resistance from his part. Chris was insanely obsessed with martial arts and thus much stronger than me in reality. His cute looks were deceiving. I might or might not have learned that the hard way a couple of times.

For a moment I gathered my sleepy self, trying to pry my slightly swollen eyes open. It seemed like the whole gang of GRiD had decided to take over my room. Do was casually lying right beside me on the bed, fully clothed. Tae sat on my armchair over at the corner and with his arms crossed over his chest and an amused expression plastered on his face. Joonie was still hovering on my left, searching for my phone.

While they all stared at me, I grew a little more annoyed. “What’s with you all today? Can’t a guy sleep around here?”

“Just gimme your damn phone and I’ll leave you alone,” Joonie pestered on.

I sighed. I knew it was this sort of ritual of ours, that we would lock our phones up and refuse to go anywhere near the internet before any major gigs. The purpose was to erase all distractions to give our best performance on stage. Back in the day, that is. I hadn’t thought they would still insist on said tradition. I wasn’t very fond of it.

Look, I needed my social media.

“I’ll get bored without it…” I mumbled to myself, before trying to change the topic. “Anyway, what time is it?”

“Almost twelve,” Joonie said, now holding out his hand, still expecting me to hand over my phone. Seemed like he didn’t plan on giving up anytime soon. So I gave up first.

“Aish, whatever. Where is it anyway?”

That question wasn’t really directed to anyone, yet Do-hyun still replied by nonchalantly fishing it out from under the pillow he was using. Then he handed it straight to Joonie.

“Ugh, if you knew where it was, why didn’t you hand it out in the first place?” Joonie asked with a deep frown between his perfectly styled eyebrows.

Meanwhile Do shrugged. “I wanted Min to wake up but couldn’t bother with that myself. It was hard enough yesterday.”

“Haha, good point, I’ll give you that one, hyung,” Chris laughed, proceeding to give Do-hyun a high-five. I was genuinely surprised—Chris rarely used honorifics. I couldn’t quite tell if he was being sarcastic or not. The little brat.

They all continued chatting as if I wasn’t even there. In my damn room. I rolled my eyes.

“Now that you’ve all had your fun and Joonie has successfully robbed my phone, can’t you get lost and let me sleep?

Tae nodded. “Yeah, I guess. Let’s go.”

And with that, they finally put me out of my misery and exited the room—with the exception of Do-hyun, of course. He continued staring at me with those deep brown eyes of his, his black thick hair styled in that not-messy-messy -look. Despite the fact that my heart was picking up the pace, I decided to ignore him and try to get some more sleep.

I wasn’t successful by any standard. It annoyed and baffled me why they bothered in time and time again to try to wake me up, if I didn’t need to yet. They all knew damn well that whenever I finally could sleep, I slept like I was dead and definitely needed those precious hours of rest. I didn’t get enough sleep often in the first place so why was it so hard to just let me when I did actually sleep some.

But I got over that irritation quite fast, because another annoyance started taking more and more headspace. That was Do-hyun. He still stared at me, laying casually on my freaking bed. Even though I wasn’t facing him, I could feel his gaze burning a hole to the back of my head.

I tossed and turned, wrinkling the sheets in the process, but wasn’t quite able to fall back asleep.

Eventually, I turned to face Do and threw my pillow towards his face. Hard.

“Why are you here again, hyung?”

“I’m bored,” he plainly stated and hit me back with the same pillow.

Blinking, I couldn’t help but glare at him for a moment in wonder.

“Aish, fine!” I eventually growled, running a hand through my shaggy, damaged beyond repair hair while getting up. My fingers got stuck—a rude reminder that I had bleached it one too many times already.

Do-hyun found it funny, though. I saw the reason why when I glanced at the mirror. The hair literally pointed at every possible direction. Trying to tame it with my hands did exactly nothing so I stomped to the shower.
