When I took a studio drawing class in college, I learned of the existence of "art erasers" turns out companies can get rid of the smudging problem if they want to. The erasers just coast 1$ more. It's all I use now. (edit: You can get them anywhere you can find a number #3 pencil, which can be an adventure in and of itself)
