Chapter 8
St. Mark’s Basilica was a sight to behold, the towering building loomed over the courtyard, where tens of dozens of people gathered to take pictures, regardless of social distance. The domes on the interior were decorated with paintings of various people, some resemble the statues on the outside. Of course, only Sam and Alex were enjoying the view. Jason was struggling to keep up while at the same time also trying to hold onto their shopping bags.
Alex and Sam’s voices echoed throughout the structure, their laughter somehow overcame the voices of many other tourists. The chapel was gorgeously furnished with medieval art and such. They were amazed at the chapel, it intrigued them. Unfortunately, that was as much fun as they were gonna have, because Jason was complaining about the bags being too heavy, and that was the end of that.
Alex and his parents sat in their hotel room, Jason was with them. “Wow, Alex, you look really sharp!” Sara commended, discreetly kicking Harold in the shins so he could compliment him as well. “Er-Um, yeah, nice look, son!” Of course, the suit had fit Alex well, though he wasn’t planning on wearing it everyday. He changed himself in the bathroom and put his suit back into the paper bag.
“I’m gonna check on Sam.” Alex said as he picked up both bags. As Alex walked down the hall, he began to feel a pit in his stomach, a sinking feeling that told him that something was very, very wrong. “Silver? Why does my gut tell me that something’s not right?” Alex asked out of the blue, the phone began to ring. “I’m sensing something bad, but I can’t quite tell what, that feeling you got was because of me, like a sixth sense. You’re right, something’s wrong.”
As if I didn’t know that! Alex could practically hear the alarm bells going off in his head. “I heard that.” Silver said curtly from the phone. Alex’s bad feeling grew worse and worse with every step he took. The feeling suddenly spiked when Alex reached Sam’s door, the door knob practically shouting: “Don’t touch me, I’m poisonous!”
Alex hesitated, “Silver? Something bad’s inside, something really bad.”
“I know.” Silver said grimly, crawling over Alex’s skin, transforming him into the matte black armor-clad terminator that he saw yesterday, “Silver?”
“Get prepared, there’s a major threat on the other side of the door.”
“Stop it!” Alex said, transforming himself back, “There’s no threat!” He opened the door, “Hey Sam-”
The bags fell to the ground, falling over and dumping the suits onto the shaggy carpet floor. The door slammed shut, no one could see or hear them. Alex gasped in horror, because he didn’t see Sam standing before him.
He saw a monstrosity.
The creature was formed of dark pulsating sinews, seemingly made of a liquid-like substance. It was like a spider-webbed version of Silver, with blank spaces that weren’t quite filled with muscle fibre, the boneless exterior form only went to the hips, where Sam’s legs and feet were. He was still dressed in his jeans and sneakers, Alex realized. The body had emerged from the hips, flowing and forming into shape as liquid form before turning solid. Well, not that solid, the sinews were flowing black liquid, Alex could tell.
The torso part of the second-external body was more solid, with imprints that suspiciously resemble scales on the front side of the torso, it didn’t look like it was naked, it was almost like there was a physical field, covering the muscles and such but retaining the same broad-shouldered shape maybe too broad.
Its head was somehow monstrous and humanoid at the same time. The face initially seemed human, but there were obvious differences. The skin color was onyx black, with a sandpaper-like texture to it, and the scleras are black with yellow irises. Not to mention that the thing had sharp, vampire-like teeth. But still, the thing looked like an older, more buffed up version of Sam. There was a distinctive feel about this creature that made it seem intimidating. At the end of its hands were claws, seemingly attached to the digits. They were long, sharp, and dangerous-looking.
But it wasn’t acting dangerous. Alex could see the genuine fear in Sam’s eyes as he stared at his clawed hands in horror. “S-Sam?” Alex choked out, Sam looked up, fear and confusion was evident in his wide eyes. Silver leaped into action, covering Alex’s entire body in the chrome and matte black sheen, wiping away the fear that was overwhelming Alex’s mind. Alex jumped forward and tackled Sam to the ground, straddling his chest and holding both of his arms above him. “Sam! Stop! Calm down!” He yelled as Sam struggled beneath him. “Sam.” Alex grounded out firmly, “Stop.”
Sam’s breaths were heavy and uneven, but the cool chrome mixed with brown in Alex’s eyes eventually calmed him down. Sam lay there, held down by Alex, as the black sinews shrunk back into his body. Normal, weak Sam held down and chest-straddled by the armored and strong Alex just as Jason walked in. “Uhhhh…”
