Willow from Nowhere

Mela and the Fox

Mela and the Fox

Jul 09, 2021

Reinard hurried and caught up to her while the rest of the team followed. It felt like she was leading the mission even though she was the subject. Lokni took up the rear and shivered in discomfort as the forest closed in behind her with every step she took. They could hear the song Willow softly sang into the wind as they walked. “Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows ~ Fair is the lily of the valley ~ Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne ~ But my love is fairer than any.” The rest of the team was set to walk the distance in silence, barr Willow’s soft singing, but Mela, ever the talker, scurried up to where Willow now walked ahead. “So your power is controlling plants then?” she asked in an excited voice. Willow looked over at the scientist and crinkled her eyes in amusement, “Not quite I suppose, but also, yes.” Poor Mela looked very confused but it seemed to make perfect sense to Willow who returned to her song. “Will you tell me what it is then? I’m so curious! You have such an air of mystery and strength but you seem so small and delicate.” Willow kept her eyes ahead but answered, “Is there a contradiction?” “Oh, no I suppose not. Will you not tell me then? The others will try to force it out of you. I just thought you should know.” Willow looked over and smiled but only asked, “Do you know any Celtic songs, Mela?” The scientist looked properly flushed and confused but let the conversation go. “No not at all, is that what you’re singing?” “Aye, I do love my folk songs. Do you want me to teach you one?” Mela was confused even further at Willow’s use of ‘Aye’ when she had no accent otherwise but nodded anyway. “Great! We’ll start with an easy one. It’s called Black Fox. I’ll sing the first verse, then we’ll sing it together.” Mela nodded and the rest of the team had taken immense interest in this drawn out conversation. Willow sang the first verse, “As we were out a-hunting, one morning in the spring ~ Both hounds and horses, running well, made the hills and the valleys ring.” Mela sang it again with her, and they continued until the entire song had been sung. Willow’s eyes twinkled as they sang the whole song together one last time and she danced lightly around an entranced Mela. Kierra glanced over to where both Reinard and Lokni stood, arms crossed and whispered over, “Maybe she’s just a normal girl? She seems so small and simple.” She glanced back in time to see Willow looking at her with her signature smile in place. Kierra flinched slightly then when Lokni said just as quietly, “All the more dangerous, the ones you never see coming.” Donn and Reinard stayed silent and watching as Mela made them sing the song again.

Something I write in my free time. Chapters are very short and likely will stay that way.
S.H.I.E.L.D. kind of team but with a fantasy spin.
This special ops team gets a report of an undocumented supe and goes to investigate. What they find is a can of worms they didn't bargain for and a girl of oddities.

**Not professional and written mostly for my own entertainment. If you like it, I'm glad because I wanted to share it, but if not, then don't read it.
