I wonder if the judges had some sort of theme in mind or specific aspects they were looking for and your comic just didn't happen to have them. I think it's a very polished and professional looking comic, so if you didn't win it might have been due to small details, many of them possibly not in your control.
About the thumbnail, I like option 3 the most, the scary spectre :3
