Alexander sat at the large dark oak desk in his office barely listening as his Beta droned on and on about the current issues facing the pack. Currently he was discussing the most current issue, which was a horde of vampires that kept attacking their southern borders and were threatening to enter further into their lands more and more everyday. Each attack was worse than the prior, the most current leaving four of their pack warriors dead and nine others severely injured. Apparently the vamperian leader was one of the strongest in the nation and the impending war on their land could lead to the downfall of the pack.
“So the assassin that I hired is specifically trained to deal with…” Kyle, his Beta, started to say before the Alpha, finally finding interest in the topic, interrupted him.
“You hired an assassin?”
“Yes, remember the elders voted on it last Wednesday,” Kyle answered. Alexander didn’t remember the vote or even the discussion of the hiring of an assassin at all. If he was honest with himself, he hadn’t really been paying attention to much over the last couple of weeks because of a strong feeling that he had in the pit of his stomach. He couldn’t quite put his finger on what the feeling was but he knew that he had felt the feeling before and that he had a strong inkling that something was coming.
This distracted mindset was quite different for the Alpha, who usually took his role as the pack’s leader very seriously. He was even considered to be one of the best Alpha’s in the entire nation of Celari and was well respected by the surrounding packs. This abnormal behavior was causing Alexander to slip up, which was the worst thing that could happen at such a crucial time such as a possible war.
“Ah yes, now I remember,” Alexander mumbled, causing Kyle to roll his eyes at the Alpha. Alexander just groaned at the disrespectful behavior. He didn’t like this feeling of not being in control of his emotions or mindset. It made him feel inferior as an Alpha and increased his stress levels in an already too stressful situation. He also felt like he was letting his pack down, which is the last thing that he wanted to do.
“Anyways, as I was saying, the assassin that I hired is specially trained in dealing with vampires. In fact he is well trained in dealing with all of the beings in the nation. He was one of the lead assassins in taking out the Mother Tooth Fairy and also took out that one witch who was eating all those children in that candy house a couple years ago.”
“So what? He killed a two foot flying weirdo with a tooth obsession and a fat old hag with a taste for children, what makes you think he is qualified in helping us go to war with a vamperian lord?”
“He umm… well he has a special connection to vampires specifically and is one of the best assassins in the nation. You will actually meet him today, but before that I should warn you…” But before Kyle could finish his sentence they both heard the sound of footsteps approaching the office. What made the Beta pause was the strange look that the Alpha had on his face when he heard the repetitive clacking sounds on the hardwood floor of the pack house.
It was a sound that Alexander hadn’t heard in years. In fact, it was a sound that he hadn’t heard since his wife died several years ago. It was the sound that heels made on a hard wooden surface. The sound evoked shivers down the Alpha’s spine as memories of his wife started to flood his head. It was the sound that he heard everyday as his wife brought him lunch and every night when his wife would come and retrieve him for bed.
As these memories came in waves, he remembered just how much he missed his wife. She was the definition of a perfect Luna and even though they were not originally fated mates, Alexander grew to love her as much as he would his actually fated mate. A knock on the door brought him back to reality.
“Come in,” the Alpha spoke, his voice breaking a little from the onslaught of memories. He quickly cleared his throat and wiped the tears away from his eyes before Tasha, one of the pack’s warriors, opened the door and poked her head in.
“Alpha, it seems as though you have a visitor who says that they have an appointment with you.”
Alexander looked to Kyle questioningly, who only responded with a raised eyebrow and a slight head nod.
“Yes, a visitor. You can tell them to come in, Tasha,” Alexander finally said. Tasha nodded before turning to address the visitor outside the room before fully opening the door and stepping aside so that they could enter.
As the person entered, Alexander looked them up and down. Their bizarre attire made him question the entire situation and had him a bit dumbfounded. They were wearing a long black cloak made entirely of crushed velvet. The entire rim of the cloak was adorned with a golden trim. Underneath the cloak, it seemed like the guest was wearing a tight bodysuit made of black leather with gold zippers and buckles that decorated the front and sides. As Alexander looked down, he noticed the source of the clacking that they heard earlier. The guest was wearing black thigh high boots with a four or five inch chunk heel. They were also accented with gold zippers and clasps.
The weirdest part of their attire was the mask that they were wearing. It was gold with bold black features that resembled a drama mask. Half of the features of the face were pulled down into a creepy frown and the other half was pulled up into an even creepier smile. It automatically sent a shiver down Alexander’s spine, making his skin crawl as all of his hair stood on end and his body was littered with goosebumps.
“You hired a Golden Arrow?” Alexander finally spoke up, turning his attention to Kyle, completely ignoring the person in front of him.
The Golden Arrows were one of the most notorious assassin groups in the nation. They were infamous for being some of the most dangerous people and hiring one was seen as a last resort for most respectable packs. It was viewed sometimes as even an act of desperation. The organization did not have a good reputation in the majority of the nation due to the lethal force that they administered in their jobs. They often did not hold back in terms of casualties, even killing innocent bystanders in some cases. A lot of people saw them as murderers and theives who would do anything and everything to get the job done. There were even rumors that the organization made deals with the devil himself.
Before Kyle could answer, the Golden Arrow spoke up in a soft voice, “yes Alpha, and it looks like I got here just in time. In fact, I am surprised that Kyle did not call me sooner considering what you are up against. Nikolai moves quickly and with deadly force. I wouldn’t be surprised if he moved in on your territory within the month.”
“Nikolai?” Alexander questioned.
“Yeah… actually,” the Golden Arrow paused, turning back towards Tasha, “it’s Tasha correct?” He paused, waiting for Tasha to nod before continuing. “Well Tasha, will you excuse us for a moment? The information I am about to share is a bit sensitive.”
Tasha’s eyes widened before scowling, looking to Alexander for an answer. He just gave her a nod signaling that it was okay for her to leave the room. She bowed in response, still scowling at the ridiculously dressed guest before making her exit, closing the door behind her. As soon as Tasha left, the Golden Arrow’s demeanor changed dramatically. His once posed stance became slightly slouched as he sauntered over towards the chairs that sat in front of the Alpha’s large desk.
“Sorry, but this shit I am wearing gets fucking hot and I am not really supposed to have anyone other than my direct client see my true identity before officially taking a job. You know, assassin code and all that.” The Golden Arrow said in a laxed and brash manner before laughing. He then quickly took off his cloak, placing it on one of the chairs.
It was then that Alexander smelled a familiar scent. One of fresh dew that settled on the forest floor in the early hours of the morning with a slight undertone of honeysuckle and lavender. It was a smell that he had experienced in ten years. It was the smell of his fated mate.
