Frieda giggled to herself, hanging upside down from the tree outside her family house. Any second now, one of her siblings would be walking past. Her smile disappeared as she heard the ones moving beneath her.
“Oi! Daysingers! Come out and play-” one of them sang out.
Duskwalkers. As if the day couldn’t get worse, Bes emerged from the house.
Bes had risen early, intending to challenge Frieda’s mischief with his own.
It had become almost a game between the siblings, ever since the change. They would plan something troublesome for each other while the others would try and foil it.
His ears twitched before he actually left the house. He could hear the sound of people outside the building – people without heartbeats.
“By Dagna, you’d think that the Duskwalkers would know better by now.” He cursed to himself, grabbing his staff from its home next to the door.
The Joy’s had long since trapped their properties, having started when Frieda was old enough to not get caught in them herself. Their new forms had only made it easier.
The first Duskwalker fell through a hole in the ground. Two more were pulled up into Frieda’s tree by vines tied around their ankles. The last three were hit in the head by Bes.
“You’re late.” Frieda complained, dropping down from the tree to see their newly trussed up captives.
“Get over it. Mum’s gonna be unhappy about this.” Bes said with a frown.
“Not as bad as dad. Weren’t the knights meant to be keeping Duskwalkers out of the civil lands?”
“Yes, they were.”
The two turned to face their captives.
“You are going to give me the information I need.” Frieda said, her eyes beginning to glow.
