“Well Yuudai-san,” Saku’s voice suddenly pulled him from his thoughts.
“H-Huh?”
Saku held up a wine glass, tipping it toward Suzu ever so slightly, “Congratulations. Your fiancé is quite lucky.”
“Oh, right. Thanks.”
The redhead raised an eyebrow, tilting his head some.
“Maybe it’s because I’ve been up for like 20 hours straight and I’m a little drunk but,” he took a sip of wine while his eyes seemed to scan Suzu over, “you don’t seem as thrilled as you should be.”
Suzu winced at that. Had he been that obvious? For a few moments, he didn’t respond, he just looked back down at the ring. The ring that had meant he’d said yes to a commitment, that he had promised himself to someone.
“That’s not it. It’s um, it’s fine.”
At that, Saku suddenly laughed and Suzu found that he had really missed that sound.
“Really Yuudai-san? Because that fine sounds very similar to the fine you gave me when I told you about that upperclassman kissing me on the roof on Valentine’s Day. Remember? It took me like two months to tell you about it, but you swore you weren’t upset. And you said ‘fine’ just like you did now.”
Ugh, that memory. Suzu was not a fan of that nor of the way Saku spoke about it so casually. He did remember that day, the way he felt at the time. It might have even been part of the reason why—
No, now wasn’t the time to dwell on it.
But Saku was right. He wasn’t fine. His thoughts were a mess and honestly, he felt miserable. He let out a deep sigh and looked away from his ring.
“I’m right, aren’t I?”
The look on Saku’s face was rather smug, which was a typical state of being for the other. And something Suzu also missed. A pang of guilt hit him. He had to stop this, now.
“Admittedly, there’s been some complications. A lot of things have been going wrong as if the universe is telling me something.”
“Something like ‘don’t do this’?”
Suzu shrugged, not wanting to fully admit to that out loud.
“Then call things off. You’ve got plenty of time if you’re having doubts now, right?”
“The wedding is tomorrow. Actually, it’s in 11 hours.”
Saku choked on his wine, “T-Tomorrow?”
Suzu nodded, feeling all the more miserable.
“Well fuck,” Saku extended his glass out to him, “you may need this more than I do.”
For a moment, Suzu just stared at the dark, red liquid, definitely not thinking about the fact Saku’s lips had just been on the glass. And definitely not thinking about how good it must taste on his lips.
Nope.
He took the glass and took a gracious drink, earning a chuckle from the redhead beside him. Saku motioned to the bartender.
“We’re going to need the whole bottle, it seems” then he turned back to Suzu, leaning on his arm, “you’re in quite the situation, Suzu-kun.”
Suzu barely tasted the wine as he finished it off. He set the glass down, maybe a bit harder than he intended.
“Yeah. No kidding.”
They settled into silence as the bartender brought over the requested bottle and new glass for Saku. Carefully, Saku poured himself some wine.
“You know it’s funny—and this will not be any help at all to your current situation—but my horoscope did tell me I would be reunited with a past love today.”
Now it was Suzu’s turn to raise an eyebrow, “You actually believe those things?”
Saku shrugged before gently swirling his glass, “It seems to have come true, here you are after all. Hard to argue with that.”
Suzu felt his cheeks heat up, “I’m sure you have plenty of other past loves that would be worth reconnecting with.”
“Hmm,” Saku tapped at the glass with his well-manicured nails, “Not really. You were the first and only man I ever loved.”
