In addition to my allergies, I faced another obstacle in my quest to get a dog. My parents were doctors who worked long irregular hours in the NHS and, for some strange reason, were convinced that owning a dog would be impractical. They remained fixed in this position, even after I informed them I could absolutely look after the dog all by myself and would gladly quit school in order to do so.
However, when I was 17, my dad retired and suddenly had significantly more time in his daily schedule. Sensing that this was the perfect time to strike, I penned a letter to him that outlined the benefits of getting a dog in extensive detail.
