Eventually, my parents, worn down by years of constant nagging, agreed to a compromise.
I was doing my A-Levels at the time and my mum told me if I studied hard and got good grades, she would reward me with a dog. So, for the next year, I worked hard and, once the exam season was over, I was rewarded with good enough grades to get into university.
My mum waited until the week before I was due to move out into halls to break the news to me.
At the time, I found the fact that my mother had come through on her promise by effectively replacing me with a dog somewhat infuriating. However, at the end of the day, the joke was on her because I moved straight back in with her after I graduated from uni.
