They sat there in silence and it honestly killed Suzu. He wanted to know more, to hear about Saku’s training, what he planned to do now, and who Noah was.
Of course, he hadn’t missed Saku saying some other man’s name when they both cursed the announcement.
Oh shit, the announcement. He needed to call Jiro. He looked at his phone and saw there were a series of texts he’d missed (or perhaps, ignored) as he had caught up with Saku.
“I, um, need to make a phone call real quick. Will you still…”
Saku nodded, not needing Suzu to finish his question, “I’ll be here. I have to make that same ‘I’m stuck here’ call too.”
Suzu smiled before retreating to an empty lobby and calling his fiancé.
“Jiro. Hi.”
“Suzu, I was starting to worry. You haven’t responded to any of my texts. It’s been hours since I last heard from you.”
“Right, I know. I’m sorry,” Suzu leaned against the wall, “it’s just been…a lot.”
“Yes well, I’m sure you can imagine the stress I’m dealing with on this end.”
He winced, sensing the harsh undertone in Jiro’s voice, but he had every right to be upset. They were supposed to get married in just a number of hours after all.
“I’m sorry. But, they’re still delaying all the flights. They said the wind is too dangerous to fly in.”
There was silence on the other line and Suzu held his breath, unsure how his fiancé was going to respond to this news. He was more afraid of Jiro’s reaction than of what it would do to their wedding plans.
“Then you should consider a different travel option,” Jiro spoke evenly, annoyance clear in each word, “You have your license, don’t you? You can drive to the JR Rail station and take the bullet train.”
“I mean, yeah. But if it’s not safe to fly, I can’t imagine driving will be better, even to the nearest station. Plus, I’ll still be late.”
Jiro scoffed, clearly growing more annoyed and angry with Suzu’s excuses, “I will handle the ceremony arrangements. I can get things pushed back a few hours; the weather is a convenient excuse after all. Just get here.”
Suzu frowned. He should say something. He shouldn’t just keep his worry and anxieties to himself.
“J-Jiro I think maybe—”
“Suzu. Do you really think you have time to waste? Go get a rental car and a train ticket. You can use my credit card.”
“…Sure. I’ll um, be home as soon as possible.”
And then, Jiro’s tone seemed to lighten up, “Be careful, Suzu. Don’t drive too recklessly.”
Suzu smiled, feeling better about things with Jiro in that moment. He cared; he was probably just overwhelmed. Everything had been so stressful. Once he was home, it would be better. All these coincidences he was taking as signs wouldn’t matter. He just needed to get there and get to Jiro for everything to be normal again.
“I won’t. I love you, Jiro.”
“You too.”
With that, Jiro hung up and Suzu took a few deep breaths before going back towards the bar.
Back to Saku.
