New Chapter - Ink Reward! - 2nd week at camp, Trust Falls - This takes place the 2nd week of camp.
When Danny met up with Joey that Wednesday one of the first questions Joey asked him was how it had gone with that guy.
Danny saw it as an opportunity to clarify the situation.
"Oh, good, but we're not- I'm- we're not like together together or anything. I mean he's great, but-but it's more of a friend situation, you know?" Danny said as they walked to Joey's car.
"Ah," Joey nodded thoughtfully, as he gave Danny a slow once over.
Danny grinned at him awkwardly.
"Got it," Joey said, then added, "don't worry, I've got one of those in my life too."
Danny didn’t really know what Joey meant by that, but he had a feeling he was still misunderstanding him.
He nodded anyway.
"I'm seeing him again on Friday though. I'm volunteering at his camp."
"Nice! Wow, look at you being a good friend," Joey said nudging Danny with his elbow.
"Yes?" Danny said, unsure what he was agreeing to.
"Proud of you," Joey said as they got into his car.
"Thank you?" Danny said, and though he still wasn't sure they were on the same page, he couldn't help but smile.
On Friday, Danny almost found himself looking forward to going to camp, which he found very strange.
He went there straight from work again, but got there a little late. Everyone was already in the clearing standing around the stage, Kai had just finished announcing their activities for the day.
He walked up to Kai as the pairs went off together around camp.
"Still wearing a tie," Kai said as he hopped off the stage.
"Hello to you too Kalani. And don't worry,” Danny said, holding up a leather briefcase, “I've got your gym shorts and shirt in here.”
"Ah," Kai smirked, eyeing the briefcase, "I've always wondered what people carried around in those. Guess that solves that mystery."
Danny didn't mean to laugh, it wasn't even that funny of a joke— if one at all— and yet, there he was, laughing like an idiot.
Kai grinned at him. "Alright c'mon, let's go to my cabin so you can change."
"Oh," Kai said as they walked into his cabin, "before I, or you, forget again." He opened his closet and pulled something out.
"You dry cleaned ‘em?" Danny said as Kai handed him the outfit he'd left at the cabin the week before.
Kai shrugged, "you seem like a dry cleaning type of guy…"
Danny nodded, "thanks, how much?"
Kai waved it off, "don't worry about it."
Danny held Kai's gaze for a moment before nodding and thanking him again.
Kai waited outside while Danny changed.
"Alright," Danny said as he walked out, "what did I miss from last week? What are we doing today?"
Kai narrowed his eyes at Danny. "Wearing enough bug spray there Danno?"
He could smell it oozing off Danny, the bug repellent odor replacing the much nicer usual faint smell of cologne Danny had.
"Did you dump the whole bottle on you?" Kai asked, raising his eyebrows.
"I didn't put on any last time and I had like fifty bug bites!"
Kai chuckled, "well you must have very sweet blood then."
“I think bugs can smell that I hate them,” Danny said crossing his arms, “so they attack me.”
Kai broke out into laughter.
Kai walked Danny through a tour of the camp, it was the main thing that Danny had missed out on the week before.
Danny would consistently stop and add notes to the camp map Kai had given him.
Each time they stopped Kai found himself smiling as he looked over Danny's shoulder to read the notes.
"You have terrible handwriting," Kai said at one point.
"I'm writing against a tree, Kalani!" Danny barked back.
"Alright, so now what?" Danny said as they made their way through the last trail the kid campers had access to, "what has everyone else been doing?"
"Trust building activities. We've missed out on the big group ones like the human knot, but there's still other ones we can do."
"Trust building activities?" Danny said with suspicion in his voice.
"You do realize the tone of your voice is just cementing the fact that we have to do these, right?"
"Like trust falls?" Danny's eyes narrowed in suspicion.
"Um, yeah, sure we can do those," Kai said, a grin growing on his face. "We usually do like a low ropes course and stuff, but a trust fall sounds good. You can go first!"
Kai walked behind Danny and held out his hands, motioning for Danny to fall.
Danny didn't trust Kai's big grin, it looked more mischievous than usual.
"No," Danny said, narrowing his eyes, as he turned to Kai, "I don't wanna fall flat on my face."
"Daniel Arturo, I would never!" Kai said in a very unconvincing tone, placing a hand over his chest in scandal.
“Mhmm.” Danny said, raising his brow.
Then Kai grinned again, "though technically you would have fallen flat on your back… alright, ropes course it is."
"Wait, ropes course?"
"It's easy, don't worry about it, inches off the ground, we'll work our way up to the big ones over time as a group."
Danny found out his balance wasn't as great as he had previously believed.
They fell over five times as they tried to walk an eight-foot distance between the trunks of two trees.
"C'mon Danno, one more time, I know we'll get it this time," Kai said after he and Danny toppled to the ground.
"So," Danny said, sitting up brushing his hands off and combing one through his hair, trying to push it back into place, "you’re really gonna keep calling me Danno huh?"
Kai shrugged, a small grin on his face. "I like it…"
"Oh, he likes it," Danny told a nonexisting audience. "Usually," he said looking at Kai again, "when I tell people not to call me Danno, they- get this- stop calling me Danno. You know, like nice normal people?"
"Well, yeah but… you haven't told me that in a while. And you seem like the kinda guy to… I don’t know, voice his thoughts and feelings— loudly and angrily and with the threat of a lawsuit. So… I figure you would've gone off on me by now if you really didn't like me calling you Danno…"
Danny scrunched his face and pouted.
"Or,” Danny thoughtfully proposed, “maybe it's just because you're stubborn and have selective hearing?"
Kai grinned, "well then, in that case, we're matched Danny," he patted Danny's knee as he got back up.
"We're-"
"Come on we're both pretty stubborn," Kai said, "so let's not give up on this ropes course."
He held out his hand for Danny. Danny stared at it for a moment before taking it. Kai helped pull him up off the floor.
They climbed back up onto the ropes.
Kai looked at Danny.
"If this is a team-building activity Danno," he said with his camp counselor voice, "how can we work together to solve it?"
Danny looked back at the rest of the course, they had managed it well enough, it was just this last rope walk that kept tripping them up.
“Um,” Danny said, he grabbed onto the tree trunk with one hand and extended his other to Kai.
Kai took his hand, and looked at Danny, waiting for more instruction.
“You walk over to the other end and I’ll hold onto this and support you, then you reach out to the tree over there and support me.”
Kai grinned, “sounds like a plan.”
He took a step out on the rope, holding onto Danny’s hand for balance. Danny stepped forward a little with him, holding on tight to the tree.
Danny walked out as far as he could manage, his grip on Kai’s hand tight as they wobbled side to side, trying to maintain balance. Finally, Kai was able to hold onto the tree on the other end of the rope and help Danny walk towards him.
“Cheehoo!!” Kai cheered as Danny stepped up close to him, making it across the rope.
They grinned at each other then hopped off.
“What’s today’s main activity?” Danny said as he dusted off some of the dirt and leaves that had stuck to his shorts. "Please don't say more ropes stuff."
Kai grinned, “oh, no, you’re gonna love it!"
Danny nodded, “you know, I feel like you don't really have any solid basis for that statement, but I’ll certainly like it more than last week’s if it doesn’t include running."
“You're gonna love it,” Kai said again, matter of factly.
