Sketchy (Part 2)

Sketchy (Part 2)

Aug 13, 2021

Baring
"What do you think you are doing?"

"I was...just..."

"Harassing my brother?" A large muscled guy said glaring at me with a look I could only be described as murderous. I cowered back instinctively. The guy was at least 186 cm, with short black hair cut into a buzz cut and large glaring tattoos on his naked biceps. I gulped as I watched him flex his arms through his low cut tank top.

A small laugh erupted from the car disrupting him for a second. I used that opportunity to step back from the car. And I watched Bulging and Dangerous look at his brother with surprise in his eyes.

"I thought he was harassing you." Bulging and Dangerous said squinting his eyes at Josiah's amused face.

Josiah rolled his eyes and his brother huffed out an exasperated breath almost as if Josiah had said something he always said. Except he didn't say anything because I didn't hear any words.

Bulging and Dangerous sighed, "I know, I know. No macho chivalry."

I looked between them trying to figure out how they were communicating. I looked at Bulging and Dangerous. He was the only one speaking and Josiah hadn't signed anything, in fact it seemed like his brother had looked at his face and just knew what Josiah meant.

"You can't blame me. I saw a muscular jock huddled over my car window. What was I supposed to think? That you suddenly have game?"

Josiah flushed at his brother's words and his brother laughed before looking over at me like he just realised something.

Josiah rolled his eyes again. I was starting to think that was his default setting. I watched the brothers interact with each other as they ignored me like I had suddenly disappeared.

I moved closer to the window and signed a phrase I hadn't used in a long time. A phrase that I remembered from the first time I learnt sign language.

‘You are cute.’

Josiah blushed and his brother looked over at me with squinted eyes. Bulging and Dangerous squinted in my direction for a while before he turned his intrusive squinting back to Josiah.

Josiah glared at his brother with yet another coded message in his eyes but his brother raised his hands and said, "Sorry Jos, this one is all you."

Josiah huffed out a breath and signed whatever he was hoping Bulging and Dangerous would tell me. The only problem was despite his frantic signing I didn't understand a single thing. I tried to play it cool by asking Josiah to sign slower but that didn't seem to help. After an embarrassingly long time. I pulled out my phone and asked him to sign it one more time. Josiah sighed but also signed one more time and I recorded the whole thing. Saving it for later when I can google or ask someone.

"I can't believe you made a friend. I can be persuaded to believe that but what I can't believe is that your friend is a dumb jock." Bulging and Dangerous said pulling open the driver's door.

Josiah stared at him with a disapproving eyebrow raised past his low hanging curls.

Bulging and Dangerous just laughed and slid into his seat, "You know it's true. I bet you have been thinking the same for a while now."

Josiah leaned over and pinched his brother. I stood outside the car awkwardly shuffling around not that I wasn't involved in their silent conversation.

Josiah's brother rolled his eyes and asked  Josiah, "Do you want to hang out at the party for a few minutes. I can wait for you while you talk to your 'friend'."

"Daniel, my name is Daniel," I said looking at Bulging and Dangerous.

"Killian."

My eyes involuntarily strayed towards his tattooed muscles and suddenly the name Killian couldn't be more perfect. Like I am so good at Killing I was named after it.

Josiah shuffled out of the passenger's seat and walked around the car. He nudged his head towards my car and we walked over to it. Before we could get inside Killian poked his head through his window and glared at me.

I turned to Josiah and said, "How about we stay here. We can just sit on my car's boot. It's pretty sturdy and it can hold an elephant. Or your brother." I whispered the last part.

Josiah looked at me and laughed uncontrollably. He pushed himself up onto the car's boot and just doubled down with laughter. He looked over at his brother and looked at me and laughed.

I smiled nervously as I watched Killian glare at me through his windshield, "He is really intimidating. I don't slack at the gym but your brother looks like he swallowed the whole thing. I said looking over at Josiah.

Josiah smiled and wiped a stray tear from his eyes. I looked at his amused face and I couldn't help but smile. Josiah hadn't said a word to me but he didn't seem uncomfortable which made me happy for some unknown reason. And because of the happy light feeling that was passing through me, I blurted out the first thing that came to my mind.

"Something random happened to me today," I said leaning against the trunk.

I turned to look at Josiah and his face was bright as the moon cast a shimmering light against his white skin. His skin gave off a soft white hue under the moonlight and his large hazel eyes watched me as I told him my tale. Josiah's curls fell over his left eye as he tilted his head slightly. With the moon's glow on his skin and the curls swaying past his eyes he resembled an inquisitive puppy. A golden retriever or a shaggy dog.

"I saw myself through the eyes of a stranger."  I whispered.

It wasn't a secret but whispering the words seemed like the appropriate thing to do. I stared into Josiah's eyes and continued, "Someone left me sketches of myself. They just slipped them into my locker and I have to say, the me in those sketches is better looking, happier and certainly more magical than this handsome devil." I said, pointing to my chest.

Josiah laughed and for a second the moonlight made it seem like his eyes had widened. Josiah sat up abruptly and his body became rigid and stiff. I moved over to stand in front of him confused by the change, had I done something to make him uncomfortable?

"What? What happened."

Josiah shook his head and signed something that seemed like he was saying ‘it's nothing,’ despite it looking like it was something.

From then things seemed to move in a blur. Killian was next to us in a second and he was shoving Josiah into the car in the next second. Then within a blink of an eye. Car doors were being slammed and they were leaving without a second thought or a goodbye in my direction.

I stood under the streetlight confused at what happened then after a few minutes I pulled my phone from my pocket and texted Kol that I wasn't feeling well and I was heading home. After all, I still needed to go to work tomorrow.

I pulled open my driver's door and slipped into the seat still confused about what exactly happened under the streetlight.

Josiah Thomas is a selectively mute artist with sarcastic thoughts, nightmares and a skilled hand. Daniel Baring on the other hand is a loud, boisterous popular jock who excels at all contact sports but can not draw to save his life. These two are about to find out that everyone is a little broken and healing can come from the least expected place. Mix that with high school, crushes, soccer and a surprisingly laid back school nurse and you get a heartfelt YA novel that's not for the faint of heart. Find out how these boys fall in love, heal and deal with high school drama in this youthful tale.
