All thoughts spin around in Penny's head when she gets home. She just had coffee with a stranger. It does not feel like something she would have done in normal cases, at the same time she felt stupid about his spilled coffee. But the worst of all was that it was embarrassing. That she spilled his coffee, her short answers, the silences, the kiss on the hand…
At the same time, there had been something exciting about him. Not a word he said had been badly meant.
Allergen comes to her in the hallway when she takes off her shoes.
"How was your day, Princess?"
Penny looks down at him. Earlier today, he had declared that she is magical, from another world and also a princess. Princess. It just feels wrong to be called that.
"Why do you call me the Princess? It feels so responsible. You can call me Penny."
"According to the laws in Tine, it would be a shame for me not to call you by your title, but if you so wish, I can call you Princess Penny."
"I'd rather be called just Penny. Okay? Anyway, this necklace…"
"Selidin", interrupts Allergen.
Penny takes a deep breath before continuing.
"Yeah, about that. My mother told me it was one of the few things I had with me when she adopted me, but it may have belonged to someone before me. Are you sure it's me you're looking for?"
"Of course, Princess Penny. You understand what I'm saying while everyone else just hears me meowing."
She laughs and shakes her head.
"You really are not going to stop calling me Princess, are you?"
"No. And you have to get used to it. Soon enough, everyone will call you by your title. You can not avoid your fate. You were born as Princess of Tine and must perform the tasks required by your title."
Penny laughs but then looks at him, she stops laughing when she sees that he is serious.
"Will I know what kind of tasks my title requires?"
"Soon enough," he replies only briefly.
Penny sighs at the short answer and goes to the living room and sits on the couch. She picks out her Sketchpad and pencils. She alternates between drawing on the paper and texting Clara. She is trying to decide if she should add more flowers to the drawing or not. Is it good as it is, or will another tulip be just what is needed? She turns sheets in the sketchpad while Lisa comes out of her room. Allergen goes up to Lisa and strokes her leg, she picks him up while she greets him happily.
"Hi Harry, aren't you a cutie?"
Penny tries to concentrate on reading Clara's message and writing a reply but can't help giggling at the name Lisa has given him. Lisa opens his mouth and looks at his teeth.
"We went to the vet today who told mom that you have to start brushing your teeth, dear. Otherwise you can have problems with them!"
Penny ignores Lisa and continues to write to Clara. Lisa enters the bathroom with Allergen in her arms.
"What are you gonna do?" it is heard from Allergen in the bathroom. "Now you put that thing down. I warn you! Let me go, I do not want to be held and have that thing near my face!" Suddenly a scream is heard so loud that Penny jumps at the sound.
"Stupid cat!" Lisa shouts after a terrified Allergen that runs and hides under the sofa.
"What happened?" Penny asks.
Lisa comes out of the bathroom with a toothbrush in one hand. The other hand is injured. Three red claw marks go over the back of the hand. Blood has seeped out.
"Oh no, are you okay?" Penny asks cautiously and gets up from the couch.
"What does it look like?" Lisa sniffs back, almost crying. She's probably in pain, I should probably not take it personally, Penny thinks and fingers her necklace and counts to five. Lisa still does her best with Allergen, she has wanted a cat for so long that Penny feels stupid if she does not help her with him.
"Mom lets you take responsibility for the cat, I know that but at the same time you have to ask for help when you need it, I can help you next time."
"Yeah, but you did not even want him here!"
"Maybe not, but he seems to be here to stay, right?" Penny smiles at her sister who smiles back when she tells about the vet visit.
"As I said, we were at the vet with him today, mom managed to get an appointment this morning." Lisa says and smiles at Penny, it is noticeable that she is happy with Allergen.
"That's good, and no chip or tattoo?"
"No, but we will chip him in a few weeks if no one says he is theirs and then he will get his first vaccination as well." Lisa touches the red skin on her torn hand, Penny takes a closer look.
"Did he scratch you hard, can I see?"
Lisa extends her hand and Penny grabs it. Not knowing why she raises her other hand. As if it were instinctive, she strokes the wound. Penny thinks the wound is not as bad as she initially thought. The claw marks do not go as deep or are as long as they initially looked.
Then she discovers that the wound is slowly healing in front of her eyes.
The claw marks become smaller and smaller until there is no longer there. The skin is as fine as before, all that is visible are a few drops of blood.
Lisa froze and opens her eyes wide.
"What was that? What did you do?"
Penny stares at Lisa's hand which she is still holding.
"I do not know?"
Lisa takes back her hand.
"What do you not know? You did something!"
"I… Eh…" Penny manages to stutter.
Lisa looks skeptically at Penny.
"Did you use makeup or anything?"
Lisa inspects her hand carefully and tries to rub away whatever it is that Penny used. It does not go away so Lisa goes to the bathroom to try to wash off what she thinks is makeup.
Penny looks at her hands. She does not understand, what just happened?
"What am I, a freak?"
Allergen walks up to her.
"Not a freak. You are magical!" says Allergen and winks at her. "I see that your powers have awakened. If this world isn't magical, then Selidin was probably discharged, when I touched it it charged up, therefore your magic was only awakened after that. Are you ready to listen to me now?"
Penny does not know what to answer, there is no other explanation than magic in this case. But how is that possible? Magic is not real.
Lisa comes back to the living room. Allergen disappears quickly so as not to have the teeth brushed again.
"It does not go away, what kind of makeup did you use on me?"
Penny looks down, should she tell the truth or lie about something? Lisa will not believe in magic anyway.
"I used wound glue, okay?"
"Yeah, was that hard to tell? By the way, how did you know Harry was going to scratch me? I appreciate the gesture but it isn't very nice that you just assumed I was going to make a mistake."
"What do you mean?"
"You did not go get the glue, you must have had it in your hand already?"
"Well, I know how you are," Penny laughs.
"You're so mean!" Lisa replies angrily. Penny sighs, then it's this time again, she thinks.
"You are always angry at the smallest detail," Penny says annoyed.
"You do not think it would hurt if you could be a little nicer instead?", Lisa answers snugly and she raises her voice more. Penny raises her hands to her head to cover her ears. She's starting soon, Penny thinks.
"It's not okay what you're doing now. I know you hear me!"
"I just can not bear you screaming," Penny replies with her hands still close to her ears, ready to give them protection.
"I'm not screaming!", Lisa shouts so that Penny can quickly protect her ears. Penny looks up at Lisa who is starting to turn red in the face.
"You are so… so…" Lisa does not get the words but makes a frustrated scream, walks towards her room and slams the door. Penny sighs as she takes her hands down from her ears. She picks up her sketch pad with pencils and goes to her room and lies down on the bed with them. Without thinking about it, she leaves the door open. Penny lies in bed and draws when the Allergen appears.
"Princess Penny, we have to talk."
Penny looks up from her sketch pad and Allergen jumps into her bed.
"You are in danger! Those who kidnapped you will try again. You must make sure you are ready for that day."
Penny is a little worried by his words, she has not stopped drawing, but hardly notices what she is doing with the pen.
"And how do I do that?"
"You have to practice your magic and learn to transform."
Allergen walks on the bed close to her head.
"If you do not do that, you are not just putting yourself in danger. There is a prophecy that tells the fate of your and the other kingdoms' heirs to the thrones."
Penny shakes her head, is he serious? Is her whole life already decided?
"So I have an already decided life? If I want to decide my own life, is it not possible to change destiny?"
"A prophecy is set in stone, unfortunately, but it is not your whole life. There is an evil and you must help fight it. If you do nothing, the evil will come here too."
"What kind of evil? What comes here?"
"The evil that exists in our world, it will come here to this world, the world without magic," Allergen replies, looking sadly at her. Penny stops with the pen and looks down at the drawing. Without being aware of it, she has drawn a beautiful tiara with red stones. Allergen puts its paw on her drawing, next to the tiara.
"And you know more than you understand. The princess within you wants nothing more than to come forward."
Instead of the drawing, he puts his paw on her hand.
"Just because you are a Princess, you will not stop being Penny. You are not two different people, you are one and the same. That is why I know you will be a good and strong Princess."
Penny can not help but be touched by his words.
"So, when does our training start?" Penny asks and Allergen smiles at her.
