Over the years, I started to understand the meaning of “old”, it isn’t something that has aged or something that came from the past, it means no longer useful, a burden that remind us that we have lost something. You could be just born or be a hundred years old, but if you become useless in any way you become old, the same thing with objects and especially with memories, they are the constant painful hint that all time pass is better, or that something you cherished is gone, maybe for good.
After we finished eating, the first bell for the next class rang, we both picked up our things, without saying a single word, and came out of the cafeteria. I started walking towards the math class that I was supposed to have at that hour every Vurnechj[1], but before I could give another step, Julia stopped me.
- Luke where are you going? We need to go to history classroom - she said disconcerted.
- What are you talking about? I have math right now - I answered lost and arrogant.
- Don't you remember what Zernufi Parkinasa said this morning in the test meeting? - she asked me with her suspicious look.
- Well actually, I was... - I said trying not to tell Julia that I wasn't paying attention because I was imaging dumb cheesy stuff, like an idiot.
- Luke, you fell asleep, didn't you? - she finally said, saving me from saying something ridiculous and embarrassing.
- Yes! Demiah’jaru, I didn't sleep well last night - I said hoping she would believe that.
- Well havarizh’ Rakuro’x we are azhnerechj’x now cause if not you would be in huge prochjna’x - she said, while she pulled me from my sleeve.
We entered the history classroom, and I cloud feel that particular smell of old books going up my nose, at the same time I recognize some of the boys and girls I saw that morning in the gyrchjtalem, and then I knew it, it was another meeting for the Personality Test, still I couldn't understand why we were having it in the history room. I followed Julia to the front of the classroom and sat right next to her, it felt weird to be sited up front, I usually sat in the back corner where I could sleep without being bothered. I tried to ask Julia why we were having history class, but in that moment Muknilat[2] Hugo Zientek entered the room and began to talk about Agryssian history with that loud sleepy voice he had, and obviously Julia wasn't going to talk with me, or to anyone else for that matter, she was the kind of girl that was super dedicated with her studies, and as couldn't pay attention to Muknilat Zientek’s boring lesson, I started to look at Julia while she took notes, and did that cute thing when she took her tongue out of her mouth and smiled.
After the class ended, I picked up my things, I ran outside the classroom like I was on fire and waited for Julia outside. When she came out, she didn't seem ultari[3], she seemed more like annoyed.
- You need to start paying attention in class, this is important - she said while passing me her notebook in rough way.
- Why do I need this? Is not like we are having any exams or something- I said very rude.
- If you didn't know, in one nachtrajari we are going to present the Personality Test and we need to know this before it! - she said kind of angry, it was all silence for a second.
- Demiah’jaru Julia, I didn't mean to be rude; can you help me? - I said finally, even though I was really tempted to answer something like “so what?”.
- Okay, but just with two conditions - she answered looking directly into my eyes, I got scared.
- First, you're going to stop looking at me, because I'm not pretty or for whatever reason you do it, and start paying real attention, and second, you're going to trust me, deal Luke?!- she said, I was surprised, not even my own mother talked to me like that, I kind of liked it though.
- Deal Julia - I answered and give her a hug.
- Back off! - she shouted while smiling, so I returned back the smile, and I could believe I did that, I wasn’t usually that touchy, I was making myself sick.
I was going directly to the science lab, until Julia stopped me, again.
- First of all, I'm going to tell you what is going on this nachtrajari - she said and push me towards the cafeteria.
- This nachtrajari everything is going to be a bit off, first we have a two-hour meeting, then from 9 to 9:20 a recess in the cafeteria, then history class until 12, then lunch till 13 hours, and the last hours physical education, clear? - she said.
- No way! Is going to be the most boring nachtrajari ever, but I guess it’s okay - I said while following Julia to the table we sat that morning. - It isn't going to be boring, you're with me - she added with a huge smile in her face, and for the third time in one day, I blushed. I began to search for my lunch that was supposed to be in my backpack, but then I remember that in a hurry that morning I left it in the kitchen table, and I didn't have a single brupuri[4] left to buy anything in the cafeteria, so I didn't had anything to eat, then I noticed Julia took out a slice of cake and cheese sandwich out from her backpack.
- What are you having for lunch Luke? - she said and started eating the first half of the sandwich.
- Well I... I mm… I forgot my lunch at home - I said while looking directly to Julia's food like stray animal, I think she must notice that I was starving because in that same moment she passed me the other half of her sandwich.
- Here you go, do you want also a piece of cake? - she said with her mouth full of sandwich, but still cute.
- Havarizh’te, so do you always bring cake for lunch? - I asked.
- No, is just for today - she answered a little bit fuiraleh[5].
- What’s wrong Julie? - I asked her with a huge piece of sandwich in my mouth.
- No, is nothing, and wait a second, did you just call me “Julie”? - she said with her suspicious look.
- No, wait, demiah’jaru! - I said laughing like crazy, she also laughed, but it was still awkward, I mean, we had just met, and I was already calling her nicknames? Awkward. After we finished our lunch, we came out from the cafeteria, as we still had half an hour before our next class, Julia decided that we needed to go to the school’s old playground.
It was a very old playground, there was a seesaw, three broken slides, a dirty sandbox, two damage swings and some rusty monkey bars, the only game that actually worked in that small ghostly playground was the seesaw, I couldn’t find a reasonable answer to why we were there. Julia dropped her backpack in the floor and jump to one of the sides of the seesaw.
- I used to come here all the time when I was younger, but after the school constructed the new playground everyone forgot about this one and with the years it became a mess - she said, I followed her and sat down in the other side of the seesaw, then both of us started jumping, we looked like a pair of dumb kids playing in a creepy playground, it was all fun for a while, until Julia's smile faded away and she turned her head down, so I stopped jumping, and I left her in the high part of the seesaw.
- Why are you suddenly fuiraleh again? - I asked looking directly to her.
- Demiah’jaru, it is nothing - she said again.
- Julia there is no need to lie, you can trust me - I said, she turned her head up and looked at me with small tears on her eyes.
- Is just that today is going to be the first zachjnyta[6] I will have to pass without my brother, we used to come here all the time, it was like our spot, I don't know why I came here in the first place - she finally said almost crying, I putted Julia back on the ground, we got out of the seesaw and sat on a wet wooden bench near the sandbox.
- I didn't know that today was your zachjnyta or that you had a brother- I said.
- Well we just met like 6 hours ago, is not like I could have told you the story of my life in that time, and he was actually my twin, he died in some kind of accident almost a year ago - she said already crying.
- And don't worry about my zachjnyta, nobody remembers it anyway - she added, I didn't want to ask her more about her brother, it would had made her more upset than she already was.
- For what is worth, ultari zachjnyta Julia - I said, while hugging her tightly, she returned the hug back and we stay like that until she stopped crying.
- Havarizh’te Luke, I needed that - she said while drying her eyes with her sweater sleeve.
- I think is time to go - I said with a soft smile and trying to be delicate, she got up from the bench and picked up both backpacks from the ground, she turned back to me and passed me mine, I got up too and we went walking slowly to the gym.
