Where Angels Die

A Sweet Goodbye - Part 1

A Sweet Goodbye - Part 1

Aug 23, 2021

The pain I have suffered and all the disappointments I had to face over the years taught me that life is hard, unfair, bitter; and not just for me, but for everybody that still breaths on this broken creation. There is no other way but to make it bearable, and we do so by letting ourselves enjoy those sweet instances of pure joy, those that if you’re fortunate can last one second yet they feel like a life time. That should be enough, but we’re humans, and we’ll always crave for more, causing that sweetness to become an addiction, one so dangerous that it makes our lives even more miserable, leading us to wish we have left after the first taste.

The next day I woke up feeling dizzy, perhaps as a result of not eating enough that nachtrajari, in any other situation a would have call on sick and miss one day of school, maybe even two, but that day I simply couldn’t, primarily because I had my “murninzaah” with Julia and nothing in this creation would had made missed it, but also because that was the last day before the Personality Test, they were going to give the final and most important information, and obviously I couldn’t miss that either. I was still upset with my parents, so again I went to school more early than usual, when I came out of my house I saw my bike laying in the floor, I had forgotten to picked it up the day before so I guess the shop called my father and he went to get it, that meant I had to leave my anger aside to havarizh’ him, I really didn’t wanted to, but I had to do it before my mother forced me to, that would have been even worse.

I arrived to school and went straight to the cafeteria, hoping to see Julia in our table reading her old book while drinking a warm beverage like she did every morning, but she wasn't there, I looked at the huge clock hanging in the cafeteria wall, I thought that maybe it was too early, but it wasn’t, in fact I was more late that usual, then a crazy thought crossed my head, maybe she went to our spot, I didn’t knew why Julia would be there at that hour, still I took the chance.

I went to the old playground and it was completely alone, not a tuzhnechj to be seen, just like the cafeteria, there I started to get worried, she never missed school, and even less with the Personality Test so close, then another thought crossed my mind, that she could be already at the gyrchjtalem like the day I met her, so I ran there, but when I entered it was also empty, the meeting was about to begin, I tried to reach her, but she wouldn’t answer her echjtalu, in that moment the three teachers and the other students entered too, so I didn't have another choice but to sit down somewhere before Zernufi Parkinasa began to yell at me.

I still don’t believe what I did that morning, for love, for azhnechjzaa[1], or just for being stupid, but because Julia never came through that door, I decided to sit in the front part of the gyrchjtalem and take notes in a broken sheet of paper I founded in bottom of my backpack, just for her; I would never forget the surprised look on the face of Zernufi Parkinasa. When the meeting ended, I had covered already both sides of the sheet paper with instructions, timetables, warnings, and a tone of other stuff, written with my huge and horrible handwriting, and still no sign of Julia, so I went to the cafeteria worried and imagining all of the things that could had happened to her, but when I was about to sit down in our hidden table, a saw Julia passed by the window running, like if someone was chasing her.

- Julia! - I shouted while hitting the glass with my fist trying to get her attention, she turned around and came back to the cafeteria walking with hard steps.

- Where were you? I tried to reach you - I asked her lost once she sat in our table.

- Remember yesterday when you left me in the estoryka kri kurfftane? Well, I was going to my aunt's zachjnyta celebration in Amhardi[2], I was planning to be in the yellow estoryka at 5 hours, but the party got longer and way more crazier than I expected, so I arrived to the estoryka at 7:40, and for my voch’ssajani[3] there were no available kurfftane’x back to Embrachjti[4], or at least not direct ones, so I end up waiting for two hours, there I realized I forgot to charge my echjtalu, that’s why I didn’t answer you, and because I thought I would have enough time to walk calmly I didn’t brought extra burpuri’x for the praaduli, so I had to came here running like a crazy person! - she replied mad and with a little bit of sarcasm.

- Oh! And the best part is that I missed the most important meeting of the whole nachtrajari - she added still trying to catch her breath, but she looked so funny all sweaty and agitated that I just laughed.

- Luke don't laugh! This is serious, now I need to look for Zernufi Parkinasa, and you know that it is impossible to find her - she said disappointed and trying not to laugh.

- That won’t be necessary - I said while sliding the broken sheet of paper towards her, when she finished reading it, she looked at me with her suspicious look.

- I… I can't believe this - she said very surprised.

- I'm not as useless as you think Julia - I said smiling with satisfaction. - Is not that I think you’re useless, is that I didn’t expect this, but just one thing, you need to improve your handwriting, is horrible - she said laughing.

- Come on! A simple "havarizh’te" would have been enough - I answered in a sarcastic way.

- Well, havarizh’te Luke - she said also in a sarcastic way and laughing even harder, I laugh too.

After an entire day of advice, directions and more information finally the day was over, and in the last five minutes of class, Muknilat Matinzu gave to all of us the clothes we needed to wear for the Personality Test, it was common grey gym uniform, it seemed pretty comfortable. That afternoon the sky was clear and very sunny, excellent for a “murninzaah”, I was trying really hard not to make obvious my excitement.

- So... Are you going to tell me now where we are going tonight? - she asked me while smiling.

- Mystery, mystery, mystery… - I replied, and couldn’t feel more embarrassed, what a stupid thing to say.

- Ovikariak Luke, tell me, the curiosity is killing me! - she said stopping me with her arm.

- No, you need to wait, it is a surprise - I said trying to play dumb.

- What is it with you and surprises today? Come one, tell me, ovikariak!- Julia said desperate, it was amazing how persistent she could be when she wanted to know something.

- Exactly I’m full of surprises today, and that’s why you need be patient, or else... - I said trying to imitate her suspicious look.

- Or else what? - she said crossing her arms and actually doing her suspicious look.

- Or else you will be forcing me to tickle you till death - I answered and began to tickle her, I knew Julia hated them, so it was perfect, she started running and screaming, and I chased her, both laughing, until we arrived at her house.

- Don’t you ever dare to do that ever again - she said still laughing.

- Is not my fault you can’t be patient; those are the consequences for curiosity - I answered struggling to keep it cool.

- See you at 17:30 Luke - she said smiling while taking of her shoes in the front door and then closing it behind her, and I just stood up there smiling like an idiot.

In that second, I knew that I only had more or less one hour and a half to prepare everything, so I ran towards where I left my bike before I started chasing Julia and ride it as fast as I could to my house. When I arrived, I went to my room to change my clothes to something fresher for the night, then in the kitchen I look for the things I hide the day before and took out the cake recipe from the shelf where my mother kept all her cooking books. I didn't give anything to Julia for her zachjnyta, and I kind of felt bad, so I thought that a zachjnyta cake made with all the love in the creation would be better than any common gift. After I putted the "cake" in the dechjtraru[5] I began to prepare the cheese sandwiches and our drinks, it was already 14:07, so while the cake finished baking, I went upstairs for the imchjnale basket that was in my parents’ bedroom. When what was supposed to be a cake was ready, I took it out from the dechjtraru and while it cooled down I packed up the candles, two forks, a lighter, napkins, the drinks and the cheese sandwiches, I took out the creams from the bag, and with the best intention I tried to decorate the cake, when I packed up the cake it was already 17:11, so even though I was in a rush, I putted very carefully the imchjnale basket in the front part of my bike, I was finally ready to go.
