Where Angels Die

A Terrifying Test - Part 1

A Terrifying Test - Part 1

Aug 30, 2021

For most part of my life I have believe that “scary” and “terrifying” were synonyms, both meaning to fell fear; but after 12 years of nightmares and loss, I came to the conclusion that those words describe two completely different feelings. In one hand, being scared lasts no more than 5 seconds, it can be sudden in the moment but you kind of saw it coming, and that feeling doesn’t keep you from continuing with your life. And in the other hand, being terrified lasts for a very long time, if not forever, it’s so sudden that it paralyses you, is a feeling that makes your skin crawl, and it makes you wonder if it is worth continuing any further.

The day of the Personality Test finally came, I could feel the expectations and the nerves in the air. I woke up that morning at 6 hours, because according to my calculations that was time enough to be ready so that I could go and pick up Julia at her house by 7 sharp. I took out of my closet the grey uniform they had given us the day before, after that I grabbed from my desktop my school identification and a black pen, Zernufi Parkinasa was very persistent in remanding us that it was of utmost importance to have those two things that day. With my identification and the pen in my hand I went downstairs to have breakfast, which my mother should had been preparing like she did every Oramfte, but that time she wasn't, I was relieved because I didn’t wanted to see her, I was still upset with her. Making my own breakfast took longer than I anticipated, yet my time was just enough to look for my favorite red hoodie and to leave the house without rushing, or at least that’s what I thought.

The morning was bright, and you could hear the waves in the coast, those 5 minutes that I was on my bike were splendid, I even wondered if that feeling was like the wurntika Julia told me about. When I arrived at her house, I saw Julia sitting on her front door steps with her arms crossed, like the night before.

- Luke, where were you?! We are going to be late! - she said while she sat on the back part of my bike.

- It is only 7:09 Julia - I replied.

- Yes, but we need to be 30 minutes earlier on the Inkaffet! - she added. - Don't worry, we are going to be just on time - I said while I speeded up, - Did you brought everything we need? - she asked me after a while.

- I brought my identification and the black pen, so relax - I said trying not to be rude.

- Demiah’jaru Luke, all of this has me a little bit on edge - she said a little embarrassed.

- It’s okay Julia, I understand - I answered with a soft voice, and truly understood, I mean, I wasn’t showing it because I was trying to pretend to be brave but in reality, I was as fidgety as her.

Finally we arrived to the Inkaffet, which was located in the exact center of the city and that later made me realized that we would have got there sooner if we had taken the praaduli. I left my bike near the entrance, with three other bikes, and after we took our shoes in the ichjliazh krefari we entered, and there were only 6 other students and Zernufi Parkinasa that was talking with one of the Guardians of the Inkaffet.

- I told you we were going to be just on time - I whispered, but Julia didn't answer, she seemed even more nervous than before. We sat on some strange metallic chairs, that were actually very comfortable, to wait for the rest of the students to arrive. At 7:34 Zernufi Parkinasa began to hand out some grey folders with a white rectangle on the center to everyone, the Guardian began to talk, she was giving some kind of instructions, but she had this weird way of speaking therefore I didn't understood her, so I just copied what Julia was doing, we were supposed to write first our last name and right next to it our first name on the white space, and also to attach our school identification to the top of the folder with a paper clip. In that moment, a second Guardian entered and explained how we were going to proceed, I turned to look at Julia, but the way she was looking at the Guardians told me that she was about to lose it.

- Everything is going to be alright - I said and hold her hand, she looked back to me and smiled.

- Are you ready Hadsan? - she whispered.

- More than you are Kovar - I whispered back.

At 8 hours the Guardians started calling names, they were doing it on alphabetic order, so I was going to enter before Julia, and when they were a few names away from me, my anxiety began to show and I began to sweat, so I took my red sweatshirt off.

- Hadsan, Luke - the first Guardian said loudly, I was paralyzed, I couldn't move, but havarizh’ Rachjnuro[1] that I had an azhnerechj like Julia to kick my ass out of the chair. When I reached the first Guardian, she opened a huge door and we began to walk through a long hallway, then I gave her my folder before I could enter, or even see, the Celestial Room, which was a huge meeting room special for this part of the Test.

- Wait here - she said and after a few minutes I entered, time enough for me to calm down, and the first things I saw were the Mayor Queen[2] sitting between the 12 kings and queens[3] on some kind of weird tall table that made a semicircle around another metallic chair, and while I sat down on the chair the Mayor Queen stood up from her place.

- Welcome to the first part of your Personality Test, today each king and queen will ask you 5 questions, that you must answer only with the truth - she said, and the first Guardian appeared with a syringe on her hand.

One of the first things they told us in the preparation meetings and history lessons was that the only way for a human to be completely honest when answering a question was to ask it when they were not in control of themselves, that’s why during trials and the first part of the Personality Test a truth serum is used, it makes you answer without thinking too much about it, but it so strong that sometimes it can cause you to lose your memory short-term.
