I looove eating durian. The smell does get to me a little but becomes totally tolerable if you freeze it. Then it just tastes like sweet, delicious ice cream. Come on, who’s with me??
When I came up with the idea for this comic, I was sure that the fruit evolved its stinky smell to ward off predators, just like the coffee plant and spicy peppers, but it’s actually the opposite! Durians’ pungent smell is used to attract animals in the wild to eat their fruits and disperse their seeds.
I mean I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised that animals enjoy the smell of rotten and dead things. My dog certainly loves rolling in them… on a daily basis.
