Day 1
I woke up to the light streaming through the windows, a silhouette outlined macys body.
“Rise and shine sherlock.” I could hear the grin in her voice.
“Good Morning to you too.” I groaned. I remembered why I was here and suddenly sobered up.
I got up and made my way to the bathroom. I splashed my face with water. Running my hands through my hair I realized I haven't showered the whole time Rynn was gone.
I popped my head out the door, “Hey Mace, can I take a quick shower? I'll pay for breakfast.”
“Mace?” She responded.
“Just trying to lighten the mood.” I smiled.
“Fine, be quick.”
“Thank you.” I held out on the ‘u’ as I closed the door.
Once I finished my shower I went into the kitchen to find Macy already looking up the address, half naked.
“Jesus christ!” I whisper yelled, turning away.
“What? I have a tee on!” She defended herself.
I groaned, “Just put something on, we should get on the road soon.”
“Whatever,” she made her way back to her room.
We swiftly got our bags and made our way to my car. With me I had a weeks change of clothes, simply hygiene items, and all of my birthday money. It’s odd that people still give you money for your birthday even when you’re an adult, but it was useful when you found yourself driving from Washington to Delaware for a girl you barely knew.
Once we started driving Macy connected her phone to the radio and started playing her music, without asking but I didn't say anything because it was good music. My phone was being used for directions. After an hour or so Macy asked about breakfast.
“I totally forgot about that. What do you want?” I asked, pulling off on the nearest exit. Thankfully we were still near a city so we had plenty of options.
She decided on having iHop and after a small wait we finally got seated.
“So do you have any reason why she would've left?” I asked before shoveling bacon into my mouth.
“No? I mean, she went to her mom's house, she hates going to her mom's house. She likes her mom, But hates traveling. So it must've been a damn good reason.” Macy explained.
“Fuck.” I whispered.
“What?” Macy asked.
“The day she broke it off with me she had a big phone call. From what I heard she was getting yelled at. Maybe her dad was yelling at her to come down already so she ran to her moms?” I theorized.
Macy just looked down and nodded and softly said, “That's really scary.”
“I don't even wanna think about it.” I agreed. We finished our meal in silence.
I drove for another 3 hours and only drifted off once. In my book that's a major win considering how much I hate driving.
“How much longer do we have to drive?” She asked like a child in a sitcom.
“Well, we're driving literally halfway across the country so,” I paused to do the math, “Another 26 hours.” I have her a straight annoying smile. She groaned and threw her head back.
I drove for another hour before pulling off and getting some liquid energy. I came back into the car with a five hour energy, two 20 ML rebulls, and a coffee.
“Jesus.” she exclaimed.
“Wanna see me chug these?” I said. Just the thought of this gave me energy.
“Fuck yea!”
We got out of the car and I started to undo the top to the 5 hour energy, Then I undid the top to one of the redbulls and mixed them. I took a deep breath and started drinking. After what seemed like forever my breath started to run out. I panicked but thankfully the last sip of the drink stopped me from passing out.
I hunched over and tried to keep down the raging liquid. As a response Macy burst with laughter.
“Shut up.” I said. I decided to keep the other redbull and the coffee for later.
Once back on the road Macy was still laughing as if I was a clown.
“Okay, okay, I’m done.” She said after a moment. A few deep breaths later she had regained composure.
“Do you need an inhaler or something?” I joked.
“Fuck off.” She playfully punched me.
Maybe she was starting to like me, and that thought made me happy.
I woke up in the passenger seat of my car. Apparently I drifted off while driving and Macy was having none of it, so she made me pull over a switch.
“What time is it?” I mumbled.
“5:00, I've only been driving for an hour or so. There's a hotel about 4 hours up that I booked a night for. If we stay on track, we'll be done by tuesday.” she said like she just got back from an office job.
“You sound jolly.” I swear I saw her hand go up to hit me as I said it.
“Whatever.” She grinned.
When I woke up a second time it was Macy slightly shaking my body.
“Get up you whore.” she whined
“Why?” I said as I sat up. I took in my surroundings and we seemed to be at a cheap motel. “What happened to the hotel?”
“We were late,” The confusion in my eyes must’ve prompted her to continue, “Traffic. Now get your stuff so we can get inside.” I was too tired to think of the logistics.
We got our stuff and made our way inside. Macy got our room as I wandered around trying to stay awake. Once we got to our room I flopped onto the bed.
I raised my head and looked around. It didn't seem too bad for the night. There wasn't much as far as decor, other than a lamp on a small bedside table, if that counts. The most outstanding feature was the lack of a second bed.
I groaned and stood up, “You can take the bed, I’ll sleep on the floor.”
“Okay, you can lay there for now, I’m going to take a shower.” I nodded and laybed back onto the bed. After a minute I heard the water running followed by the sound of macy singing ‘I love you’ By Billie Eilish
“Maybe won't you take it back? Say you were tryna make me laugh.” Her voice was soft, with a sort of deep edge. It was calming, it made me forget about the situation we were in.
I softly sang the next lyric, “And nothing has to change today, You didn’t mean to say I love you.” I drifted off to sleep imagining Macy was there next to me singing along.
I wasn't sure at the time why that image made me so comfortable.
And I wouldn’t realize until the next day.
