Elijah could feel his heart pounding so loud, that it was as if his heart was in his head. He felt sick to his stomach as he looked once again at the tormented soul before him, the remnants of his mother.
It had been only minutes since he last saw her. She was very ill, but she was alive. How had she died and become an erratic soul so quickly? None of this made sense to him. His mind was spinning with so many questions, as well as emotions of despair coming from the pain of losing his last member of family.
The monster with the contorted face of his mother scrambled on to it’s twisted legs and unleashed a horrifying sound that no human should have the displeasure of hearing, and it started walking clumsily towards him. The creature was around 15 feet tall and could easily crush Elijah in one fell swoop if it wanted to.
But Elijah didn’t care if that happened anymore. He had nothing left to lose but his life, and what meaning did his life have without his only family?
“Mother… what happened? Who did this to you?” Elijah sobbed quietly as the soul clumsily staggered towards him, as if it was a toddler that had just learned how to walk. For a second Elijah locked eyes with the twisted creature and it stopped right in front of him. It looked… so sad.
“What the hell are you doing? Get back, boy!” a man running past the scene yelled at him as he grabbed Elijah and tried to pull him away from the erratic soul.
“But… but that’s my Mother! I-I can’t leave her!” Elijah screamed, struggling against the man, trying to escape his grip to no avail.
“Not anymore it’s not! That thing will kill you if you get too close, now stop struggling!” Elijah’s struggle against the man continued for a few more seconds, until Elijah saw someone else in the corner of his eye.
It was Theo. Perhaps he could help Elijah save his mother, if it was at all possible at this point.
Before he could shout out to him though, Theo brandished his scythe and headed swiftly towards the erratic soul of his mother. In this moment, Elijah had remembered that Theo was a reaper and that it was his job to slay these creatures. In all the books that Elijah had read about erratic souls, it stated that once an erratic soul is slain, it disappears completely and never makes a peaceful entrance to the after life. He began to panic as he realised what Theo was about to do.
“THEO, DON’T-” Elijah began to shout out, but it was already too late. In one quick swing of his scythe, Theo had slain the soul, and the twisted creature disintegrated into nothing. He then stood atop the rubble of the destroyed hospital and began to shout to the quickly growing crowd of panicked onlookers that wanted to see what damage the soul had done.
“Fear not, for I, a reaper, have slain this menace to humanity! You may now live in peace, without having to worry now that I am here to protect you all from dangers like this!”
The crowd cheered and roared with happiness and relief, hailing Theo as a hero. The only one who wasn’t smiling in the crowd was Elijah, because he had just remembered something else that he just did not want to believe was true.
Elijah realised that Theo was the last one in the hospital room with his mother just before he she had apparently died and transformed. Could he have done something to Elijah’s mother? What happened to the doctor that Theo supposedly recommended to her?
He ran up to the rubble that Theo was standing upon and shouted at the top of his lungs, consumed by his despair and anger.
“WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY MOTHER, YOU BASTARD? YOU KILLED HER, DIDN’T YOU? YOU KILLED HER!!” He shouted and shouted until his throat was painful and raw.
Theo quickly dragged him away from the crowds of people, Elijah kicking and screaming along the way. He could hear the muttering of the crowds as he was dragged along.
“What is that boy going on about. The reaper just save his life, he should be grateful! How disrespectful…”
Hearing words like this amongst the crowds only made Elijah angrier.
He knew that no one would believe him if he told them what he thought really happened. He would be completely dismissed and frowned upon for disrespecting a reaper.
He vowed to himself in that moment that he would find the whole truth, no matter what it takes, and that he would expose its ugliness for the world so see.
