The gods are dead, and the Empire rules supreme.
From the shifting sands of the Golden Sea, to the soaring heights of Sezu’s Peak, imperial soldiers cover the realm with the crimson flags of Anticlia.
The land of Geva, in the northern reaches of the empire, is ruled by the lo-Serapo tribe: fearsome warriors inured to the thin silver edge of a harsh life. Living on the border of the Desolation, the lo-Serapo have no patience for the weak.
In Geva’s Temple of Sarmeti, the priestesses are entrusted with the duty of maintaining the walls erected by the ancient gods against the Desolation. In her twentieth summer, Blythe Kaevort, the third child of a minor lord, distant cousin to the lo-Serapo, is ordained as Holy Priestess.
But the wall is collapsing—not in a thousand years’ time, as their goddess predicts, but now; and war marches over the jagged peaks, out of the swirling darkness of the Desolation.
Blythe is pitched into a desperate flight across the empire: to convince the imperial court that the creatures of Chaos are escaping their prison, and the forces of lo-Serapo and Sarmeti’s priestesses are helpless to stop them. They need the imperial legions of Inked soldiers to save the mortal realm.
She meets on her journey four men.
Sostratus, the immaculate Prince.
Dirce, the gentle Mage.
Alrete, the taciturn Mercenary.
Karios, the mysterious Wanderer.
She is also accompanied by the slave Lykos, condemned for his unholy red eyes.
Her choice shapes the fate of the realm: will humanity fall to Chaos—or be saved from annihilation?
