We entered the main room of the Headmasters building slowly. After Caleb’s intense entrance, we would have to tread with caution. We moved slowly down the long hallway in a single file line, Sabrina leading. Suddenly the elevator let out a high pitched ding. Sabrina held her hand out, stopping us. There was a moment of silence, then the elevator opened, and someone stepped out.
“Daddy?” Sabrina asked loudly, standing up normally.
“Oh great.” Luke muttered placing a hand on his face.
“Oh hello kids!” Mister Kaine said smiling. “What are you doing here?”
“Are you kidding?” I asked quietly. “We came for-“ suddenly the lights flickered back on and the mechanical lock on the door whirred. “... well that.” I said gesturing to the lights. Mister Kaine laughed loudly.
“Oh the power outage. Sorry to startle you, it was simply a mishap with our electricity company.” Mister Kaine stepped past us. “I appreciate the concern but our patrolling officers would have picked up on a simple threat had there been one.”
“Hey Teddy, why you still here?” Luke asked stepping between Sabrina and the headmaster. Mister Kaine stopped, but didn’t turn around. He paused for a second then turned to face Luke.
“Well, I had come for the same reason I assume you came.” He said with a soft smile. “To ensure the safety of any important records.” Mister Kaine explained. Luke didn’t break eye contact. “I must be off now.” The headmaster said turning. “I do, believe it or not, have important errands to run. I suggest you kids get some rest. Training will be fairly intense from here on out.” The headmaster turned his head slightly. “What with the Graduation exams so close.” Mister Kaine rose his left hand waving to us as he exited the building.
“Well that sucked.” I said huffing.
“No...” Luke muttered. “...somethings up.”
“Nothings wrong.” Sabrina said. “Dad just told us what’s going on, it’s fine let’s just all go home.” She said. Luke put his hand to her face.
“No... no we have to investigate.” Luke muttered, examining the hallway. Sabrina’s expression turned visibly frustrated. She smacked his hand out of her face.
“You’re not a detective.” Sabrina growled. Luke made his way to the elevator.
“His office.” Luke muttered.
“Unbelievable.” Sabrina huffed.
“Yes, truly.” Caleb said, placing a hand to his chin. “If you can’t count on the Headmaster to keep the truth, then you are truly confused.”
“What are you even talking about?” I asked, slapping Caleb in the back of the head. “But Luke, Sabrina’s right.” I reasoned. “Wearing a tin-foil hat will get you nowhere. Plus if we get caught in Mister Kaine’s office we’d be expelled for sure.” I yelled.
“Harry back me up here.” Luke said turning to us. Harry took a deep breath, then became silent.
“I have no input.” He said flatly.
“Naturally.” Caleb scoffed.
“As much as I believe there could be more going on.” April started. “I don’t think we should trespass on the Headmasters office.”
“Thank you!” Sabrina called gesturing to us. “See Luke, this is insane!” Luke sighed and turned to us.
“Really guys?? If I’m right about this-“
“You’ll cause nothing but panic.” Caleb said, shrugging.
“Wow. Caleb’s makin’ sense now.” I said crossing my arms.
“He’s right ya know.” Sabrina said, raising a brow. Luke inhaled sharply then nodded.
“But!” Luke yelled. “Just So we’re clear, if it turns out I was right I will NEVER let you guys live this down.” He said pointing at us. We all laughed and exited the building. It had gotten even colder since we’d first made our ways here.
“Look guys.” I started. “I’m all for a party and stuff but after tonight, I’m exhausted and I’d just like to prepare for this exam if that’s alright.”
“It’s fine.” Sabrina started. “Honestly I think it’s best if we all prepare.”
“But the pizzas!” Luke whined.
“Oh please. You’ll eat them all before tomorrow morning.” Sabrina laughed.
“Alright see ya on Monday.” I called turning. Electricity pulsed down to my toes and I took off toward my dorms building. Greetings and Salutations, my name is Lauren Armstrong. Quickest Magi on campus, and that’s a fact. As you’ve probably noticed I use Lightning magic. I got accepted to Kaine University a few years ago, along with the others I guess. Since then I’d had a few classes with them, getting to know them very slowly; however, this last semester they put all of us in the same class. Since then we’d become best friends. Im a cheerleader for the school, so I can be fairly cliquey, and while people generally view that as negative, I see it as positive. Many people would describe cheerleaders often as airheads, and materialistic, but they’re also a fairly good judge of character. I’ve spent years with the others and can describe their characteristics perfectly. Luke is... very loud, he often doesn’t care much about his appearance, as he never styles his hair, or bothers to change into or buy different clothes. He’s a creature of habit, he’s never worn any other jacket besides his leather one, and his personality makes him often stray from the group, or take charge in stressful situations. Sabrina has a very serious personality. She often refuses to stray from the morally correct route. She’s a neat freak who enjoys cleaning making things look nice. She focuses much of her time on academics and her studies, rarely ‘letting lose’. Harry was a hard one to figure out but I’ve drawn a fairly accurate description of his character after my many years of knowing him. He’s probably my closest friend in our group, as he’s been in nearly every one of my classes, and us both being in athletics, our paths have crossed there often. Harry is consistent. He doesn’t change his routine’s often. He’s very strong and definitely the most athletic of all of us. His home life is rough so mentally, he’s equally as tough; however, his homelife has also led to his standoffish attitude which makes him the last one to speak his mind and influence the groups decisions. He and Luke are polar opposites which seems to have made them close friends for some reason, and just a little side note Harry loves tacos... like to a fault. And Caleb. Caleb is often under a lot of fire from the group. He and Luke are consistently at each other’s throats, but his attitude makes it sooo hard to defend him. He claims he doesn’t need friends, and his past of being a snobby rich kid shows in almost every word he speaks. That being said he’d do anything to protect the group, including Luke, and we’d do the same. Unlike Sabrina, and me, Caleb has let the fact that he is a pure magi go to his head. Guess I’ll chalk that up to his family life, which I know next to nothing about. The transfer? Oh yeah, I’ve literally known her a day soooo she’s and enigma, sue me. As I approached my dorm buildings door I slowed my pace. It had taken me years to get this super speed thing down. Regardless of what movies and shows tell you, there’s much more than just being fast, kay? Slowing down is harder than it seems, I’m constantly cold due to the wind that hits me while I’m running, and if I run suddenly after a quiet day, or early in the morning, the cramps are enough to drive me to drink. I opened the door and made my way up the stairs. My room was two floors up and three doors down from the stairs. I opened the door and trudged into the room. I flopped onto my bed and groaned.
“What’s wrong?” My roommate asked. She was a fellow cheerleader, Sadie. We rarely see each other outside practice. “Is it that Baseball boy?” She asked, sitting up. She brushed her black hair away from her face and readjusted her white robe. “What’s his name?”
“Harry... and no it’s not about him.” I groaned. Sadie cocked her head. “It’s these grad exams.” I groaned. Sadie nodded.
“Don’t worry about em’.” She reassured. I sighed.
“Wish I could.”
“You’ve got too much on your plate girl! I’m starting to worry about you!” Sadie said loudly crossing her arms and pouting at me.
“Don’t give me that look.” I said waving at her. “I have to work hard or I won’t be able to graduate.”
“Ooooh my god you are such a bummer.” Sadie complained, remember when I said cheerleaders were often good people and not just materialistic or airheads, yeah Sadie was very much an airhead. I sat up and looked at her angrily.
“Why don’t you care about this?” I asked. She rose a brow.
“Because I’m not a chump!” She responded. “We’re here for a good time, not a long time.”
“That could not be further from the truth.” I said standing up and walking to our fridge. “Where’s Tristan?” I asked, he’s her boyfriend.
“Working.” Sadie muttered. I grabbed a sandwich I had made earlier, and a water bottle and walked back to my bed, that’s another thing, running quickly makes you INCREDIBLY hungry and thirsty.
“You guys ok?” I asked taking a bite of the sandwich.
“I guess.” Sadie responded shrugging.
“That’s not convincing.” I said, my mouth full.
“Well we haven’t really spoken since the beginning of this week.” That... actually was surprising. Tristan was usually here in our dorm whenever I got back, for reasons I am SO glad I don’t know.
“Ok well what happened when you stopped speaking? Anything out of the ordinary?” I swallowed.
“No, not really.” Sadie responded. “The last time we spoke he was going to a party.”
“And he didn’t bring you?” I asked. Sadie shook her head, she then gasped.
“You think he’s cheating on me??” She squealed. Honestly... I shook my head trying not to jump to conclusions, if he genuinely wasn’t, I didn’t wanna ruin this guys relationship.
“Of course not!” I said in protest, biting into my sandwich again.
“Well that’s all I can think of!” Sadie yelled standing up quickly. She grabbed her phone. “Ooooh I am gonna get this bastard.” Oh boy... I stood up and slapped Sadie. “OW!” She yelled.
“Calm down.” I said, chewing.
“Wh- that’s it??” Sadie yelled. “That’s all you got??” I shrugged. “Wow. Well thanks for nothing.” Sadie angrily tossed her phone on the nightstand and flopped onto her bed. I finished my sandwich and sat down on my bed. “You’re so lucky Lauren.” Sadie grumbled. I rose a brow. “You don’t have all these guy troubles because no one likes you enough to make a move.” I rose a brow.
“Lucky me.” I muttered. Sadie turned to me in her bed.
“You might have to make the first move on this baseball guy.” She said.
“For the last time his name is Harry!” I yelled.
“Well that’s not how you charm a guy.” Sadie murmured. I sighed.
“Ok.” I said. “Well I’m going to be-“
“This early???” Sadie yelled. Good lord she was the most critical person I’d ever met.
“Yes this early.” I said flopping back onto my bed.
“Ya know eating right before you sleep isn’t good for your weight.” Sadie whispered. “And honestly... you’re lookin’ a bit chubby.”
“Good god you’re impossible.” I breathed. “I think i’ll Be fine I’m only a hundred fifty pounds. And my metabolism works at double the speed as yours” I grunted. Sadie scoffed and turned over. My breathing slowed and my eyes closed slowly as I drifted off to sleep... It wasn’t long until I was jolted awake by my body. I looked around slowly. It was pitch black, and Sadie was fast asleep. I glanced at our clock. “One twenty...” I muttered, rubbing my eyes. Another complication with lightning magi, we don’t sleep often, our body runs rampant with energy so it wakes us up when it’s ready to work again. Thankfully I don’t feel tired when I wake up, like others. I stepped out of bed and crept toward the door. As I reached for the handle I froze. Footsteps took off away from my dorm room. My heart rate increased. What the hell. Was someone trying too break in? We’re they trying to kidnap one of us? We’re they gonna kill us!? I shook my head, I was being ridiculous. Maybe I had just been hearing things, or maybe it was a student playing a prank. I laughed to myself and opened our dorm room. Nothing.
