Diane and I spent the night watching movie after movie. Good thing they were all movies I had seen before though. Over and over and over, I kept dozing off. Them bloody painkillers kept making me loopy and knocking me out. Had it been a movie I never saw, I would’ve gotten some frustrated with my constant dozing off and missing parts of the movie. Eventually, I dozed off for the night. Right onto Diane’s shoulder. Not wanting to wake me up, she stayed there and eventually dozed off as well.
We were woken up by the sunlight shining through my curtains, right onto our faces. I was desperate to not get up just yet, so I attempted to roll over. In the process of doing so, I kicked Diane by accident with my bad leg. She happened to be on the edge of the bed, so it was just enough to push her off the bed. Meanwhile, I had pain shoot through my leg from the impact. That definitely woke me up pretty quick.
“Ow… Bloody hell…” I mumbled as I tried to cradle my leg with the hopes it would make it feel better.
“Did you really have to shove me off the bed?” I looked over to see just the top of Diane’s head showing from the side of the bed. Her reddish-brown eyes glared at me. It always scared me when she glared at me with those eyes. They always gleamed red.
“Sorry…” I muttered. “Can you get me a painkiller…?”
“Ugh, yea, one sec.” Diane grabbed her glasses off my nightstand and got up. Her hair was a complete mess. It was quite funny to look at. In many places, it stuck up and curled in funny ways. How she deals with curly hair, I’ll never know.
Later, Diane and Dad returned to my room. Diane had the painkillers, and Dad had breakfast. Both of which I wanted.
“Here’s breakfast for you two.” Dad smiled tiredly as he handed both Diane and me a plate of beans and toast after I choked down the painkiller. My eyes lit up at the sight of the beans. Dad was being a bit too nice and pretty much letting me live off beans. I don’t think I’ve eaten this many beans since I was in college.
“Oo!” Seeing the 5-star meal in front of me made me forget about the pain in my leg. “Thanks!”
“Uh, thanks, John.” Diane hesitantly took hers. Clearly, she wasn’t too happy about it. My dad immediately noticed and frowned. To him, Diane was like a second daughter, so he knew her just as well as her own father did. He recognized when Diane was uncomfortable, especially around food.
“I can get you something else if you’d like.” Dad offered. “We haven’t got much in the house right now, but I’ll be going out shopping tonight so I can grab something easier for you to eat-”
“No, it’s fine.” Diane reassured him. She knew that we weren’t exactly well off and she didn’t want to be a bother. Dad was doing much better financially now all thanks to his promotions, but there were times he still struggled.
“Alright. Well if you need anything, just give me a holler.”
Dad left and Diane sat down on the bed with me. I could tell the idea of eating was seriously stressing her out just by the way she was simply staring at her food with an anxious look.
“Sorry about pushing you off the bed this morning.” I said.
“Oh, it’s okay. I would’ve probably fallen off anyway.”
“Yea, fair.”
“So, uh, mind telling what happened these past couple months?” Diane asked as she picked at her beans. She was trying to find a distraction so she wouldn’t have to eat. “I thought you kicked Lars out.”
“I… ugh…” I really didn’t want to talk about it. To solve that issue, I shoved a huge spoon of beans in my mouth. It’s rude to speak with a mouthful of food after all.
“Really Robin?” Diane gave me an unimpressed look. “What are you going to do when you run out of food to shove in your mouth? You’ll have to talk eventually.”
I shook my head no. “I’ll get more beans.”
“So you’re gonna just eat beans all day?”
“Yes.” I said as I took another bite.
“You’re nuts.”
I gave her a big bean smile. Diane cracked up and I almost choked. As I proceeded to try not to choke, I noticed Diane hadn’t eaten anything at all yet. I choked down the mouthful I had and pointed it out.
“Oi, you gotta eat.” I gave her a nudge.
“I’m not really hungry.” She said nervously. I raised my brow and she looked away.
“I’ll talk if you eat.” I said. “All your meals. And snacks.”
Diane really had to think about that one. She looked back at me. “Three meals, one snack?”
“Three meals, three snacks.” I stated. “Final offer.”
“And a walk.”
“Do I look like I can walk with you? And knowing you, you would take off and come back three hours later. No walk.”
“Two snacks?” Diane tried. I glared at her and she groaned. “Fine. Deal.”
“Shake on it.” I held up my hand, spat on it for good luck, and stuck it out. Diane hated it when I did that and gave me a disgusted look. She absolutely despised it when I did that.
“Do you really have to spit on it?” She asked with a whiny tone. “I don’t wanna touch your bean spit.”
I rolled my eyes and wiped my hand on my shirt. I stuck it out again and she hesitantly shook on it.
“Perfect.” I said. “If you eat all meals and snacks, then I’ll talk at the end of the day.”
“The things I do for you.” Diane mumbled as she started eating her meal. The look on her face said it all. She was pissed I made her make the deal and upset that she nearly had to touch my spit. Little miss perfect wouldn’t dare touch spit, especially not from the likes of me.
“You do it cuz’ you love me.” I giggled as I rested my head on her shoulder for a minute. I really had to revel in my victory of the day. She rolled her eyes and hesitantly took another bite. Not wanting to make her any more agitated, I pulled away from her and ate my own breakfast while making some small talk. That small talk got more and more weird as the painkillers kicked in. Those things really packed a punch. Before I knew it, I was rambling about beans again.
