a few fun facts about the book so far (bonus episode)
a few fun facts about the book so far (bonus episode)
Sep 26, 2021
So I included a few easter eggs and references in the book because I think that's fun so I'm gonna point them out here as well as explaining things that I think some people might not understand.
1. The Sealie and Unsealie Courts are the ruling forces in the faerie realm and represent light and darkness. The Sealie Court rules during spring and summer, they represent light and warmth and the Unsealie Court is the opposite. (ch.1 pg. 1)
2. I dunno if anyone else has this, but the dreams that I remember are slightly more vibrant than my irl memories, but they have a simmilar feel to childhood memories. (ch.1 pg.1)
3. I chose the topic of asteroids and what ancient civilisations thought of them because I was thinking of a space fact that I could have included (asteroid Ceres makes up 3% of the mass of the asteroid belt) and then I decided not to um and then I kinda stuck on the asteriod idea. (ch.1 pg.2)
4. The school used to be a castle (this is a dark academia fantasy novel, what did you expect) and so of course there was a chapel, and then people stopped using it. My main inspirations were the Milan duomo for architecture and Hook's Revenge carriage house and Alice in Wonderland for what stuff is inside. The journals were something I thought was cool and the pocket watches have both hands pointed at 3, 6, 9, and 12 respectively to show the cardinal points on a compass. The year is painted on the face. (ch.1 pg.2)
5. "the years had passed it by and many of the items were crumbling or reclaimed by nature" is taken from the song Slightly Out of Reach by James Labrie. the lyrics are actually "And you're old With your worldly possessions All crumbling round you And all it's glory" and I tried to incorporate them in because the mood of the song fit the vibe I was going for. (ch.1 pg.2)
6. I just want to emphasize the fact that I used the audacity of men as a part of my book (ch.1 pg.3)
7. I gave Cohen birdcage earrings because gae (ch.1 pg.4)
8. I didn't actually name Lupin after the flower, I used a tik tok that I can't find anymore. also the lupin beans fact is true, you soak lupin beans in salt water and make them into powder (ch.1 pg.4&5)
9. Rowan is a name I tried out on myself and didn't like it, Vale is a random name I found that means Valley and both of them were thought of randomly while writing. Cohen popped into my head right after I had started forming the first little bitties of the story and it stuck. not very exciting but oh well. (ch.1 pg.5)
10. Lupin says “What’s so funny? You’re laughing like a kookaburra out here, you might scare the caretakers!” kookaburras make a laughing sound to intimidate other birds. Many Australian people don't like them. I saw one at a bird sanctuary on Vancouver Island and it was cool. (ch.1 pg.5)
11. the entire last bit of the conversation is based on an experience with someone that I met at school. he seemed to think that he was worthy of being a potential suitor. he wasn't. we walked around the track for about 20 minutes and he asked me out (like going to a store, going biking, etc) at least 4 times. I was wearing Demonia platform boots, which are not made for walking in, and he had me slightly panicked the entire rest of the day so I say that he gave me blisters and anxiety. he was great (derrogatory) (ch.1 pg.6)
12. I made the floor out of cherry wood because of the red tint. the general colour scheme of the library is red, gold and brown. The library that I took inspiration from is
this one which is Clementinum National Library, in Prague. This part of the library that I see looks similar, but it is up to your imagination to see what it looks like. (ch.2 pg.1)
13. The skeleton had their kneecap privelages revoked. haha funny. If you couldn't already tell, I'm gen z and I have the sense of humor of a 3-year-old. (ch.2 pg.1)
14. one of the first journals in the abandoned chapel belonged to Verin McBookbinder the 1st. He started a bit of a trend and it started dying out around the same time the last Verin child disappeared. Just for reference, the black plague happened around that time (1320's vs. 1340's) and the last journal is from around when Canada became a country (1890's vs. 1860's) (ch.2 pg. 2)
15. There'll be a bit of backstory later, but basically as a kid Cohen would be read a book (The Swallow) and they would also spend their free time memorising the book paragraph-by-paragraph and then recite it to their friends. I was inspired by this
and I found it really cool. (ch.2 pg.2)
Oh and The Swallow is a real book, it's by Charis Cotter. It's one of the books I would always look for in the library and then I got it with my christmas gift cards. It's a ghost story, one of the few ghost stories I have (I think I have The Swallow, Seven Dead Pirates, a few collections of short stories some of which are ghost stories, and if you want to count The Girl Who Drank the Moon as a ghost story you can) but otherwise I just read fantasy/adventure books.
I think I'm gonna do more of these easter egg bonuses. I liked showing off my creative process.
little bonus episode because why not. it's not very little but oh well.
I usually listen to music while writing, and take a lot of breaks to watch youtube or I just get distracted and do whatever. knitting on a dopamine rush is also fun.

The legend of the sword in the west wing library is well-known and nearly as old as the school itself. Cohen has heard of this legend and like many students before them decides to do some research. This comes at the cost of their sanity, relationships, and much more. Even with the help of their friends, will Cohen be able to slow the spread of evil that has been working it's way into general society for centuries?
PRONOUNS: Cohen: they/he, Lupin: he/him, Aster: he/they, Nairna: she/her, Author (me!) : they/it
