The bus was late today, but I still get to Devenford High before the game starts.
I remember the drive to the lacrosse field so well, so I head there without having to ask anyone.
—Mia! —Someone calls me.
As I turn around, I see Brett, a couple of feet away, running towards me.
—Hi —I say when he stops in front of me.
—You've come to the right thing.
—Yeah, the bus schedule sucks —I say, looking around for a place to sit, which Brett notices.
—You can sit with those girls and cheer me on.
I sneak around to look where Brett has pointed me to and see a group of about 8 girls holding up several placards with messages of encouragement to the Devenford team and another couple with the names of Brett and one Josh Bryant.
—No thanks. I'd rather keep looking for another site.
—Okay —he says, smiling— I have to keep training. See you at the end of the game to take you home.
—Oh, you don't have to. If I go out a little before the game is over and hurry I can catch the last bus.
—Okay, whatever you want.
—Good luck in the game.
—I don't need it —he jokes, putting on an arrogant tone.
—I think so, you lost last time —I remind him.
—I know, but that's not going to happen again. Do you want to do a bet or something?
—No, the last time I made a bet with you, it didn't work out.
—Oh come on.You stay to watch the whole game, if we lose you don't have to come to the rest of the games.
—What if you win?
—I don't know, I'll come up with something.
Coming to see the games is not a horrible thing, but I would rather have Friday or Saturday afternoons completely free, so I accept the deal.
—Ok. But if I lose you have to know that I am not going to come with a banner to cheer you on. And dressed as a cheerleader?
—Do not even dream about it.
—Easy, just kidding.
There are about 12 minutes until the game ends. If I leave in five minutes, I can go home on the next bus. However, things are too exciting to leave, not only because of the bet, but also because of the game itself.
Devenford started the first half of the game winning, but the Sendon Cancy High School team came back and are now tied 3-3.
There is little left until the game is over and Sendon Cancy are the ones with the ball, although not for long because that Josh Bryant catches it and passes it to Brett.
Both exchange the ball getting closer and closer to the goal of the opposing team. Josh makes a couple more passes with Brett, Brett has a couple of players from the opposing team glued to him but gets rid of them and manages to catch the ball when Josh passes it to him for the last time.
Brett throws, without even thinking about it, towards the goal. The goalkeeper fails to stop the ball, which enters the goal causing the vast majority of the public to explode in applause and shouts.
The score changes to 4-3 and seconds later the referee signals the end of the match.
Brett takes off his helmet and, as his companions rush towards him to hug him, he looks for me in the audience. When he spots me he smirks and raises one of his eyebrows coolly. It's like he's saying, "I told you"
I give him a hateful look, narrowing my eyes. Brett laughs and immediately a smile escapes me so I stop pretending to be offended, I stand up and applaud, although not with as much euphoria as the rest of the people. I'm glad Brett's team wins, but I've lost another bet.
"I am looking for you". A set phrase that Mia often uses with her friends, but that Brett Talbot takes at face value, giving way to a bet between the two
