Cecily POV
"Great..." I mumbled to myself, making sure to avoid eye contact so the dog wouldn't try to get friendly with me; I did not have the time or patience to deal another hairy creature. Plus, this dog was big and not nearly as cute as the pup in my backpack.
As I walked past the large beast, I once again jumped in shock when the thing barked at me and proceeded to sniff my backpack.
Oh great, it could smell the puppy.
"Shoo!" I told the dog, swatting it away as I took off my backpack and placed it against my chest. The dog, however, was not too happy with either my swatting or the pup because it began to growl at me.
"For christ's sake, today is not my day!" I said in frustration as I hugged the backpack to my chest and began to back away slowly.
The fur on the dog's back began to rise as the growling only intensified and I began to panic... just a little bit... or maybe a lot.
Staring at what might be death in the face, I made a split second decision. I hated running and I knew in the back of my mind that it wasn't the best idea, but I wasn't about to sit around as the dog took a bite out of me or my new pet. One second I was backing away slowly and the next I was sprinting as fast as I could away from the impending danger.
Daring a glance behind me, I noticed the dog was right on my tail.
"CRAAAAAAAP!" I screamed, already breathless and tired since this was my first time running in what felt like a decade.
Knowing there was a chance I'd soon become dog food, I ran toward a fence that was approximately my height and threw the backpack over it. Hopefully whoever lived on the property wouldn't think I was trespassing when I climbed into their yard. As for the puppy in the backpack, it was better getting thrown than eaten.
With a burst of adrenaline coursing through my body, I leaped and grabbed ahold of the top of the fence, my body still dangling on the side with the dog who wanted to eat me. I was going to die trying to protect a dog while getting eaten by a different dog. This was so not the way I wanted to go.
I was about to lose the last of my strength trying to get my body on the safe side of the fence when a blur of color appeared in the corner of my eye. Freezing mid-push, I looked to the side and saw another dog running toward me, its teeth bared and a growl emanating from its chest.
"You've got to be kidding me!" I screamed, helplessly dangling from the fence. What was it with dogs today!? I knew I should have just stayed home and skipped class!
As the new addition to the party rushed toward me with no signs of slowing down, I shut my eyes and let out a high-pitched scream. I didn't want to look death in the face when I got bit to death by two random dogs.
To my surprise, and relief, I felt no pain and instead felt something soft brushing against my legs. Confused and relieved I wasn't dead yet, I opened my eyes and looked down to see the dog that had just arrived standing in front of me, facing off against the dog that had been chasing me. What I was feeling was its tail grazing against my legs as it growled at the other dog.
Almost immediately, the evil incarnate of a dog backed down, letting out a low whine before running back to whatever hell hole it came from.
Letting out a breath I didn't realize I had been holding, I looked down at the dog who had just saved my life.
It was still looking in the direction of the devil-dog but had its head angled toward me, letting out a huff once before turning to once again growl at the now empty street.
Semi-confident that this new dog wouldn't hurt me considering that it had just protected me a few moments ago, I finally let go of the fence and landed on my feet. Wincing as I moved my arms up and down, I knew I was going to be sore tomorrow.
At my movement, the dog finally stopped growling and turned to face me fully. Now that I had a good look at it, I couldn't help but notice that this dog also looked like a wolf. And come to think of it, it actually looked a lot like the pup in my backpack, just with the exception that this dog was three times larger and was all black except for one brown paw. Both of them even had the same blue eyes.
Speaking of which... "the puppy!" I exclaimed, turning back toward the fence I had thrown it over for its own protection.
