“Looks like the rain has lightened up some. We could probably get back on the road.”
Suzu opened his mouth, wanting to say something else, wanting to change his mind and say fuck everything.
But he wasn’t that kind of person, he couldn’t be.
“Yeah.”
The rest of the car ride was silent. Suzu assumed Saku had finally fallen asleep from the way he was curled up in his seat. Suzu turned on the heater, knowing the other was probably cold.
After everything Saku did for him, he could stand a little heat.
By the time they made it to the station, they had just enough time to get tickets for the bullet train. Suzu insisted on buying both the tickets even though he knew it was a weak gesture. And maybe an excuse to make sure Saku would sit next to him. Then the final call to board was made and they were ready to make the final trek home. To go back to their separate lives.
Saku settled in the seat next to him, pulling out his phone to keep busy, and Suzu could only watch him. He wanted to say something, anything. They couldn’t spend this final hour together in silence, right? After everything, was it going to just end like this?
“Do you, um, need a ride after we make it back to Tokyo?”
The redhead looked up at him, eyebrow raised, “Don’t you have a wedding to get to?”
Suzu felt his cheeks redden, “I-I just mean…I could make sure you get dropped off or something?”
He wanted any more time he could get with Saku. It was desperate but he couldn’t stand the thought of the redhead being out of his life again.
Saku shrugged, “I mean, I’m not gonna pass up a free ride but I don’t want you to be even later on account of me.”
“I think at this point, it’ll just be a relief if I show up before midnight.”
That earned an amused chuckle from Saku, “If you’re ok with it, then sure.”
Then, Saku yawned, looking even more tired and exhausted than in the car. Suzu frowned and once more, his mouth spoke before his brain could think.
“Do you want to use me as a pillow?”
Saku was surprised by this offer, his eyes widening, “Um…”
“I-I mean it’s just, we still have an hour and it seems like you could really use the rest. And these seats aren’t super comfortable so, you know…”
He hated how stupid he sounded, fumbling over his words. But then Saku smiled and everything was suddenly better.
“I appreciate it. Although you know I can fall asleep almost anywhere.”
Suzu shrugged, “But might as well be comfortable, right?”
“Mm, I’m too tired to argue.”
