William checked the drone, glancing at the laptop screen.
He frowned for a moment, then checked again noticing the camera was angled up into the canopy of sun-lit trees. Expertly, he spun the drone around, like it was a person looking up, turning themselves in a circle, only pausing to marvel at the light filtering through the leaves. Through the lens, he noticed the fluttering of white, black, and green, the ever-shifting changes as the breeze blew softly through - making that wonderful shhh shhh shhh sound of leaves rubbing and shuddering against each other.
Moving the drone up out over the trees, William could see all of Vancouver putting on its late spring skin– green grass, cyclists taking the bend around the globe of Science world, the white shimmer of the downtown core, and finally the sun flashing off the dark almost black of the water moving out towards the Burrard bridge and into the inlet.
Viv pulled at his sleeve, shifting in the grass beside him, finally drawing herself half up onto her elbows as he was ignoring her.
“It’s going to go too far out of the range, Will. You’re going to lose it,” she cautioned while settling herself more comfortably into the grass. She frowned slightly noticing a grass stain on her elbow.
He shrugged, only wanting to watch the drone fly away like a bird.
Closing his eyes for a moment, he imagined the cherry blossoms blooming and sprinkling the world with delicate fragrant blossoms. William could almost hear the noise of cars and people rushing around in front of the Hyatt and Burrard skytrain station. He could almost smell the sweetness of the blossoms, the scent only interrupted by the sharp vaporous tang of gasoline and hot metal. Sighing, he opened his eyes, dragging himself away from his imagination. He had felt rather than heard Viv shifting again beside him. He smiled a little to himself that she was getting so anxious.
The drone hovered in the canopy of the trees, spiraling lazily back down through the leaves, softly whirring. He watched in the viewer as the camera paused above two people lying in the flattened grass below. He could see a young man in his twenties and an older woman in her mid to late thirties. He noticed they were lying with their bodies close together but legs curled away like two off-set fishhooks. He was suddenly fascinated by the curious yin and yang of the moment.
But it was at that moment that he lost control of the drone and the view veered off sideways so that the last thing that he saw were his own white and gold Adidas shoes and the green, green grass.
