The room was completely silent, everyone around Eve staring at her expectantly.
Kai was on the couch, sprawled out with his head tilted to the side like a particularly curious cat.
“So you don’t remember any of it?”
Eve shook her head, biting her lip. She still wasn’t sure exactly what had happened between her and the Inzomniac in the lab.
Emily jotted something down on her pad, before glancing back up at her. “Well, it was pretty... feral, you could say. It’s hard to think a sweet girl like you are even capable of such a thing. It could have triggered a fight or flight response when he backed you into a corner.”
“I suppose you’re right... but I really don’t remember anything.” Eve muttered, fidgeting with her fingers nervously.
“I ran over with Greg when Emily screamed for him. Didn’t see all of it, but you sure did a number on him.” Kai commented from his spot on the couch, leaning back and stretching his legs onto the coffee table.
“I had some trouble prying you off.” Greg said, giving Kai a brief look of disapproval when he noticed the feet on the table near his mug. “Never knew you were that strong, frankly.”
“Really...?” Eve dipped her head, embarrassed. “I don’t think I’m that strong...”
“Well, tell that to the Inzomniac in the infirmary. I’m sure he’ll support our story.”
“Yeah... How is he anyhow?” Kai cocked his head in the opposite direction.
Emily sighed. “Stable. He’s very resilient. He’s been mumbling something to himself all night. Whenever I walk by, he stops, though.”
“So, can I see him?” Eve blurted out before she could consider the question.
“I mean...” Emily looked at Greg, who shrugged. “You could, but I don’t think he’d be very happy about it. He looked kinda traumatized, probably wasn’t expecting you to attack him like that.”
He would have attacked you, came the familiar voice in the back of Eve’s head.
...How would I know?
Come on. You saw the way he looked at you.
But that doesn’t mean... I mean, he could have just been trying to scare me so I’d leave
Ha! As if. He’s an Inzomniac you know. He probably wanted to rip out your spine or something.
Probably? So you don’t know for sure.
Well... You don’t either.
“Eve?”
“Huh?” Eve snapped to attention, shattering her trance.
“You okay there, lady?” Kai peered at her, his brows furrowed.
“Oh, yeah, sorry. Just zoned out is all.” Eve reassured them, brushing it off.
Just thinking about the maniac’s ulterior motives is all, the voice sneered before Eve blocked it out entirely.
“Okay...” Emily flipped through her notepad. “Anyway, I’ll just start over then.” She cleared her throat. “It started fairly innocent, you wanted to try to talk to the Inzomniac.”
“Yeah, he ran away from my crystal, and when I asked why, he didn’t give an answer. I remember.”
“Okay, good. So then... You asked him about the other Inzomniac’s interest in it, and he didn’t answer.”
“Right.”
“Then he backed you into a corner, for whatever reason, we don’t know yet.”
“Yeah, that kinda freaked me out.”
Emily took a second to jot something down. “Okay, it freaked you out... Anyway, I didn’t see what happened in the next few seconds, but then he backed away from you, and that’s when you lashed out.”
“I don’t remember anything after I hit the wall.” Eve thought aloud.
“Alright. Everything after that is written here in grim detail, but uh... yeah, that’s not exactly PG 13 so... let’s just uh, skip over that...” Emily suggested, flipping over roughly eight pages packed with notes. She suddenly stopped, turning back a few pages. “Except this... This is interesting. You... growled at him and tried to bite his neck.”
“I... What?”
“Yeah... You tried to bite his neck, to rip something out, I think.”
“Kinda weird, ma’am.” Kai snorted, flipping over to dangle upside down on the sofa.
Eve let out an awkward chuckle. “Well, I mean, I obviously wasn’t in the right frame of mind, so...”
“Yeah, come on, Kai. You probably would have done the same thing if he took your coat.”
“Sure, but you better believe it’d be on purpose. I’m not one to shift into an alternate persona.”
“Alternate persona?” Eve parroted the words, confused. “What are you talking about?”
“It’s just a theory. It could have been an alternate personality that your mind made up after a traumatic experience similar to what you felt around him. Being followed around like the first time could have triggered a different personality to take over, one that’s more aggressive.”
“So... basically psychological stuff.” Kai said bluntly. "Theresa would know more about that, but she's... not around right now."
The door creaked open under Eve’s weight, and she hesitantly stepped into the infirmary, looking around.
“Hello!” Came a new voice she hadn’t heard before. Her gaze shifted in the direction of the noise, settling on the younger woman, who was wearing a stethoscope around her neck.
“Name’s Nataly. What can I help you with? Are you hurt?”
“Oh, no, I’m fine. Thanks though. I was wondering if there were any... not humans here?”
“Oh, you’re one of those huh? Still not sure about ‘Inzomniac’ yet? Actually, it’s fine. Yeah, I know a guy. Someone bashed his head in at the lab, you know.”
“Heh... Yeah, I know.”
“He’s over in that room.” Nataly motioned towards a heavy door with a lock. “Had to keep him away from the human patients, for safety and such. Not that he can really do much in his condition, but you know.”
“Oh. That makes sense. Can I see him?”
“You got clearance?” Nataly smiled. “But yeah, you can see him. As long as you’re careful and have someone else with you, in this case me.”
“Okay, sure.”
“Come on in then.” Nataly gleamed as she put a key into the lock, clicking it open and pulling the door out of the way.
Eve poked her head in, scanning the room until she spotted the Inzomniac sitting on the bed and leaning against the wall heavily, his eyes half-closed.
“Hello hello, jolly fellow!” Nataly skipped over to him confidently. “How we feeling, huh?”
“...” The Inzomniac stared at her with his deep blue eyes, unmoving.
“How’s that head doing?” Nataly asked, not discouraged in the slightest. She reached up, peeling off the bandages around his skull.
He let out a pained hiss as her hands probed his head, moving it here and there until she placed her hand on his chest and shoved him onto his back.
“Thought I told you to lie down.” She sneered, grinning. “Now let’s clean you back up.”
Eve watched from the doorway, waiting her turn patiently.
